Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce as early as Monday that he will resign as Liberal Party Leader, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.

The sources told the Globe and Mail that they don't know definitely when Trudeau will announce his plans to leave but said they expect it will happen before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday.

The Canadian prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

It remains unclear whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected, the report added.

Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.

Trudeau's departure would leave the party without a permanent head at a time when polls show the Liberals will badly lose to the Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.

His resignation is likely to spur fresh calls for a quick election to put in place a government able to deal with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump for the next four years.

The prime minister has discussed with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he would be willing to step in as interim leader and prime minister, one source told the newspaper, adding that this would be unworkable if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.

While I am glad he is gone I know someone worse will replace him. I actually would have preferred if he stuck around as now the Liberals have a better chance of not completely collapsing as many Canadians are stupid enough to vote Liberal again with the cope of "Well Trudeau is not the Leader anymore".

This was the same thing the dems did in America and look what happened there

So this year Canada has the potential of having three Prime Ministers in office. It could be two if the Liberal party can stick the landing but that can't be very likely. What DEI hire will they shove into the position in between the vote of no confidence and elections? Kamala 2.0.

I know Trump is just fucking around about annexing Canada, but if he was serious Just do what Russia did in Ukraine and fund a militia in Alberta and Saskatchewan to secede from Canada and join the union. Their less populated, culturally the most amenable to America and have a lot of Canada's resources.

Canada does not have an electoral college so it is reliant on the popular vote which yes the Dems lost this election, but I have zero faith in leafs making a good choice. Though to be fair the only correct choice would be to dissolve the government French style and start again.

This is one of the rare cases where you are underestimating the Canadian people. NOBODY likes Trudeau, NOBODY liked Freeland, the party itself is heavily tainted to most citizens. You can stroll through Ottawa asking the most soy-filled golems if they think the Liberal party is worth voting for, and it'd be a 50/50 chance they would say no.

Where are you getting three from?
Trudeau is staying PM until the next election, whoever runs the liberals after he steps down will be a candidate to win PM not become PM between march and the election.

He "intends to" in 3 months and parliament is prorogued and will not address anything Trump has demanded to avoid the nuclear levels of tariffs.

The clear strategy for liberals is to hope for as much economic damage as possible from this so they can campaign against Trump and label their biggest opponent as "maple MAGA" (again).
They are wrecking it knowing it will be up to the conservatives to clean it up for the next 4 years. They are going to rack he country's credit card up in the next budget, sour trade relations, and intentionally trash the place on the way out, so they can run in 2029 on "fixing pierre's mess".

or the next elections, how big of a conservative majority is there to be expected in parliament?
according to 338 Canada-which compiles the data from all the pollsters, its going to be a supermajority with the fucking frogs bloq quebequois as the "official opposition."

Seriously watch this and see the fraudulent antics these jeets use to get in.
I feel bad for the jeets who legitimately came here for education and then to leave once they were educated because they got screwed over hard by the colleges and government. Colleges took on more international students than they could house and pushed the responsibility onto the cities they are located in and now the colleges want sympathy as they announce programs being shut down for the upcoming year because the money they get from inflated amount of Indians coming in is finally drying up. The college in my city has a single building on campus used for student housing (both local and international) and yet despite calls for more housing being built for students of all kinds they instead just pushed the international students into apartments and homes that people who live here could really need to start actual lives.

I said to my grandfather last summer that we should be proud as Canadians that our schools are so good that international students come here to learn at them but now i can see that the schools wanted to abuse that fact and throw us the people who live in Canada under the bus alongside the jeets who just wanted to be educated and return home.

I saw videos of international students telling others that if they are low on food they should go to food banks to "save money" while in Canada and honestly i think any student who abused food banks while here for schooling should be stripped of their certificates and credentials.

If we wanna hold the Liberal Party accountable for this shit we need to hold the higher ups of these colleges and universities accountable for their role in all of this.

The Fifth estate is a godsend when it comes to modern journalism and is one of the few reasons why the CBC still matters

This guy will be the next PM:
No, Freeland will be the next PM because she'll continue Trudeau's stupidity but less blatantly and she seems different since she went against Trudeau at the last second.
Trump is gonna get Canada on clearance sale. They were so worried about fake climate change they destroyed their whole country.
Carbon taxes are the wrong way to go about it. It's unreasonable to expect families with children to take to activities and hospitals and old people to drive around to use public transit.
Before 2015, Canadians had everything thanks to this man. It was during those times where you would see Canadians being smug to Americans with their "universal healthcare," "better quality of life," and "majority white people." In 2015, they voted this man out for someone who looks more handsome and promises them weed. Now we get "please die healthcare," "unlivable," and the "next Indian province." Miss him yet?
I can't help but wonder if Harper lost because of Russian interference, just like how Trump got in in 2016. Harper really tore a strip off Putin when he annexed Crimea and outspokenly supported Ukraine (this is because Canada has lots of ethnic Ukrainians). As punishment Putin helped Canada elect a leader who won't stand up to dictators (Canada is on track to be a Chinese vassal under Liberal policies) and has no idea what he's doing, which means Ukrainians are leading the operation to free the world from Putin with seized hunting rifles and Canadians are so demoralized that they'd allow Trump (aka Putin's BFF) to either annex the country if it means not having to share a country with people who don't look like them or become a prime target for a nuclear missile launch (the Northwest Territories are really close to Russia).
Yeah, if I understand the parliamentary mechanics correctly, by resigning and proroguing he actually stays in power longer than he would have otherwise.
And that's the point!

No it's not. Trudeau lost the popular vote both times in the last 2 elections but still won a minority government

Can you call me Russian or Ukrainian next so i can get the whole trifecta of nationalities im not related to Canadian politics?
Already got Chinese from someone else in this thread and Indian from you.
No child, I did not. No child, you did not. Your only future is to be rendered immobile and neutralized until the police arrest you for felony double posting. Enjoy.

Fanfiction. Canada drank the commie goblety gook stupid juice for weed and fucking eachother in the ass. Then Trudeau raped them. It's quite simple.

Its a tax that should only affect the big companies who can actually be blamed for high carbon output but like every good leftist idea it has to be ruined by making sure the average citizen pays for big corporations damages.
