Anyone feeling sad should look into Erewhon Market. The shops that have been popping up across LA. Their gimmick is that the items are more expensive... wait for it... to keep out the poors.

I hope to god we get kino vids of nogs rioting and looting. Been a while since a natural disaster devastated a culturally enriched area so things are about to turn ugly.

To expand on what others have said, much of Southern California is covered in canyons, and they don't build on the sides of them, but do build on the top, or bottom, or both. This means fire can race deep into inhabited areas - even Los Angeles, one of the largest cities on earth, has tons of these canyons especially at the outskirts.

That means that neighborhoods are more like rural farmland areas, except without relatively fire-resistant farms, it's all hilly scrub that burns well, grows fast, and is hard to control.

The correct answer is to not build in those areas, so you either have grid-like cities, or you have empty land, but that's currently untenable to the people who live there.

Also CA burns mulitiple times each year, but it's a different area each year; a particular place won't see a fire except once every 20-100 years or so.
