I can tell you as somebody who has lived in california his whole life, this might not have been preventable, but alot of things could have been done to mitigate this. The california government has essentially neutered Forestry and Fire management, which is why the issue is just getting worse as time goes on.

I agree that our invasive trees need to go. But I live here and I can tell you that We absolutely need controlled burns. There are parts of my town that go up in flames on an almost fucking daily basis because there arent enough controlled burns.

Given that half of California and Nevada burn down every year it’s safe to say that these fires happen often, which means they happen easily, which means that conditions for them to spread are common. As many have said, California was a desert before we shat all over it. You want to call fighting a thing that is forever hungry and does not care if you die doing a shit job then be my guest but I’ll disagree.

This is why I hate grouping first responders together. Being the first cop on the scene to watch a school shooting play out, who cares, fuck them. Firefighters and EMS (the ones who think twice before calling the cops) are good people.

I think depth of conflicting feelings many Americans feel for this disaster goes to where it has happened within LA specifically. This is gonna sound nuts, because it is. They clearly can't drop water effectively. How about instead, making firebreaks and trenches using ordnance? Won't put out fires but could contain it.

Because those firebreaks would have to be so far away they'd be admitting that everything between the break and the fire is going to be lost. They would be crucified.
