What a sobering thought. Say what you will about the dystopia we live in now and Israel's wars and whatever, but I feel like 9/11 was something of a rare period of solidarity and patriotism for the United States in the wake of a tragedy. It didn't last, but it helped to shape the character of the country in the 2000s and 2010s, for better or worse. This will be a reverse Katrina. I’ll be very interested to see the difference between how the two are handled. FEMA is tapped dry (hell, the entire nation is) and it’s not like Trump is going to have any real motive to go out of his way for California anyways. The question will be if they have enough soft power to force the federal government into action.

At the very least, I can see Trump holding relief funding hostage unless Newsom's resigns and California immediately kills the environmental laws that caused the fire to happen, combined with FEMA being forced to retroactively provide 1:1 funds to everyone FEMA fucked over during Helene as compensation for how Biden punished them for the sin of being in red states.
