They've actually realized they're very likely to lose anti-discrimination lawsuits. There's a tiny bit of gray area in the Civil Rights Act when it comes to affirmative action, but they have blown way way past that into full-on instructing hiring managers not to hire white males, which is outright illegal.

Published April 25th, 2001, and includes some very choice quotes you won't see the onion publish today about the rainbow group. I need to keep this in my back pocket, it's useful. Anyway, it being from 2001 lines up with my observation of published pictures of pride events, where I noted:

The 2000s, some ripped dude in a harness is up front in center at the top of the search results. It's a LOT more obvious by now with documented pictures that this is when its modern shape really began to form.

So noticing WAS happening, and people were definitely saying something about it. As @GunCar Gary and @'Ole Dente have noted, it was a mix of stacking factors. Like the 'we can get away with it' and the notoriously obnoxious 'push the envelope' mentality the LGBTQ+ has with its cultural presentation and lifestyles. Group mentality, grooming, and memetic spread pushes this mindset and makes the virus grow among the whole, with the virus being whatever makes the people who hate them maddest.

Once the infection has taken hold of these people and it's become normalized, no one questions it.

The parade’s influence extended beyond L.A.’s borders, altering the attitudes of straight people across America.
