New fire in Orange County

small but close to buildings, could become sth.

The LA Mayor is definitely toast for that one, but Newsom also had a responsibility to be proactive. As well as to plan ahead.

Newsom is done politically as well because there's too much out there. This was probably posted previously (or maybe not since it doesn't appear to be archived) but an X user took an excerpt from a speech Newsom gave in 2021 related to fire preparedness.

Here's a local archive of the video as well since I'm not sure if it's just me or if ghost archive is having issues with the video.

This is also bringing a lot of attention back to the Camp Fire that destroyed the town of Paradise and Newsom's actions in the wake of that fire. He might still try to run for President in 2028, but I wouldn't be surprised if he were to lose California in the primaries. I had generally written him off since his own state tried to recall him during COVID, but there were some people who still considered him the frontrunner in 2028. If the entire state government were incompetent, he might have been able to pull off a successful recovery and ride on that wave, but that's not going to happen and the area will still be a mess by the time he leaves office.

I thought that might be the case.

Eucalypts are beautiful, but they are absolute dicks when it comes to fires. Except for bulldozing firebreaks, you pretty much just get the fuck out of the way and pray for rain. It was absolutely retarded to plant them in California, and even worse to not maintain them. Even our hardwood here are eucalypts, so we're always primed to burn.

We do have pines, but generally as plantations, so they are heavily managed, so I've never heard of one starting a bushfire.
Locally there is a dwarf palm "dwarf palmetto" that will cover the surface of water with flaming oil once it gets going. Entire swamps will burn with as the fire spreads across the oily water. This is a reason Florida burns so well. Where these grow, you aren't taking a dozer unless you want too dig yourself out while the fire is coming at you.
Pine plantations are usually maintained with prescribed burns too keep them protected along with fire breaks.
Some areas are better at fire management than others. Suburbia is a tender box.

If anyone is responsible for that, it is the local water authority.. But doesn't a city's water authority fall under the authority of a mayor? Maybe I'm being too old-school in my thinking, but last I checked, one of the duties of an executive is making sure the people under him or her are actually doing their jobs.
Probably not. Most things such as Water Authorities are independent boards, often elected, and subject to state not city oversight. They are like School Boards.

My theory is he's going to blame the power company for killing power to the pumps supplying the hydrant
Which is fucking retarded. All of LA's water supply is at a higher elevation then the fire hydrants. They don't NEED electricity to fully pressurize the system. Gravity does that...unless of course the reservoirs are drained of supply and don't have enough weight behind them. But what sort of a retard would drain the reservoirs during the dry season?

I'm honestly in the camp that democracy has pretty much failed California.

I sympathize with the few Californians who had lost their livelihoods and did everything that they can to assist their communities, and voted for more water to be pumped and better environmental conservation to prevent wildfires. However, people need to vote in governments who are competent, and not just because they have a (D) at the end of their name. Majority of Californians have kept Gavin Newsom even after he mocked the state during quarantine by having a party at the French Laundry. I found it much difficulty sympathizing with them because I'm beholden by the idea "you deserve what you voted for." It's also to note that California is ruled by a "tyranny of the majority," a big flaw of democracy, where majority of the residents of Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego are hive-minded, yet have much more power in the government than Californian folks in the state's Central Valley.

It is obvious that California has many issues that cannot be solved by just voting them out because corruption heavily influences the voting process, such as the use of mail-in voting. The majority of California elected a government that did nothing but enlarged homeless camps, practically legalized crime (to the point San Francisco's most famous shopping mall is shutting down due to endless robberies), destroyed the sanitary systems, increased cost of living, decreased quality of life, and destroyed their demographics (only point where Republicans are to blame because Reagan). And in the end, majority of Californians have amassed a large amount of cognitive dissonance that they should just keep voting D just to keep California as a beacon of tolerance and will ignore all the problems you mention to them.

Now that the problems are pointed out, what are the solutions? The most obvious one, democracy, just doesn't work. Even though it makes me a hypocrite and dumb, I honestly think the federal government implementing "authoritarian" measures is the only way to fix the state. Turn California into a territory, arrest all the corrupt bureaucrats, shut down the state's democratic process and clean it up, declare martial law based on the multiple emergencies that are wildfires, homelessness, crime, and mass migration, appoint mayors and governors, and/or have the feds rebuild California from the ground up by building up an effective irrigation system and cutting down dead tress (and all the Eucalyptus trees). The most worst they can do is become the same thing as the Californian state government. Shit's unconstitutional as fuck, and you can already see the cracks of the dangers of feds lusting for more power, but what else is there to do?

To top it off, with direct authoritarianism from the federal government, you don't have to blame Californians if California goes to shit again.

It's actually astonishing. California truly is woke to its own detriment.

Imagine still trying to ride on the coattails of a California mayor and defending her from the evils of racism while your state quite literally burns all around you. I seriously cannot believe that watching your state burst into fucking flames somehow pales in comparison to protecting an uncaring politician from racism on the internet. Fucking retards like this Leonidas K almost make me think that CA deserves its downfall. They are literally defending politicians who are doing nothing for the people because she's a black woman.

Fucking shit. If you have time online to play Captain Save-A-Nigger, then leave X/Twitter and do something fucking productive.
They can't. Politics is their hobby and they suck at that because they only want to acknowledge the good from one party the bad from the other, and visa versa
