Bigot Brigade Something Awful and Friends - The roller-coaster train-wreck embarrassing downfall of a Web 1.0 giant and its tick offspring like from Cloverfield

A thread called "itt we are losing our god damn minds over forums drama we don't understand," started out being just jokey but truth is starting to slip through:

Hey Digital Fingers, since you read this thread. To extend your stupid analogy imagine that any time you try and walk anywhere you randomly trip over a mole hill, and it's been happening for ten years. And when you talk to the homeowner association or the city council about maybe getting rid of the moles your complaint is deleted or ignored. Eventually you are going to go apeshit on the topic of molehills in general and not any specific molehill.

This is the same way why "hurrr it's just a 6 hour" doesn't work as a blanket dismissal of the entire issue since it's thousands of bad 6 hour probations that precisely zero of which have ever been addressed fairly.

stop being a dense faggot.

SWBM, think of it like this: even though everyone (seriously!) appreciates your input on how moderators go from good to bad, the mods are still bad. Because lowtax doesn't want to deal with the outcry, the only reasonable ways to get a bad mod to go away are to either humiliate them into quitting or get them on the bad side of some of the admins.

When the administration is backing these awful mods (Koala March is incredibly bad, for instance), and they're embedded in a culture that completely absolves them of guilt and shame for anything they do in pursuit of enforcing right-think, there's not much to be done to get rid of them bar doxxing or blackmail.

Honestly, I took a good look at FYAD to try and make sense of the nearly endless hordes of pieces of shit that dehumanize anyone who is not a white heterosexual cisgender man with the correct interests and value preferences. I shouldn't have to say that fucking unironically. I really shouldn't.

GBS, currently, is worse. It is not being 'invaded' by FYAD. FYAD seems to have its own idiosyncratic, but restrained problems. A 'joke' is made, and with two or three emptyquotes, forever complete. All mockery is ephemeral, any repetition deliberate and patterned. However pointless, they are finite. Ending. Yielding.

The current GBS inhabitants let loose from their cages are now flinging poop, as mere animals, who exist only to eat, fuck and sleep, incapable of self-actualization, only subsisting on the approval of peers for the psychological maintenance of their purposeless existence. Any threats to change this cycle in any way must be met with hostility, for they are the products of billions of years of self-replication, unable to transcend the bounds of their instinct.

The fact that they are in any way proximal to civil society is dangerous. Even if nominally confined to one forum, their toxic thoughts will lend an air of respectability to behaviors unwanted everywhere else.

There are now almost 80 people on my ignore list, up from a previous count of around 4. Each and every one, as far as I can tell, is a worse poster than a guy who raped an 8-year-old. Such things, I would hope, would be nigh impossible. But human decency is so easy, yet so far out of reach, that anyone with a modicum of empathy or consciousness can obtain it, and thus by corollary, that those posters do not possess such things.

This is our community, not theirs, and we will not yield to such filth.

Best post from the aatrek drama

The funniest part of this to me is that this is actually exactly what goons used to do, so you would think they'd remember that when people would come engage with us using even a little effort they'd be swarmed with attention and encouragement. Just say hi, nerds!

I dunno man, i think there are plenty of examples of bad mods getting the axe with little to no drama. Me being a recent example.

There's also been franco and ralp stepping down, not making a big deal. Gnarly was demodded. Butt wizard too, no big blow up just a quiet demod.

Yikes. Tough room!

OK I can tell you guys don't care for my comedy so I'm going to REAL POST for a change.
I like your comedy but, well, it's easy to light of how much people hated Franco back in the day with those silly youtube videos. That kind of humor doesn't translate to addressing real, actual problems.

Nah, Franco continued sending Lady Ambien passive aggressive messages and got banned from GBS at one point because he wouldn't shut the fuckup about how GBS was garbage and if only his vision had been implemented all would be right with the world.

Wait, what? You have to pay again to come back from a ban? So there's a built-in financial incentive for the most dedicated users to be fucked with?

'Thousands of dollars in avatars'? What is this fuckery?

Yeah. Regular bans can be reversed for $10. Avatar / Custom title changes are $5. New registrations are $10.

This ties into the overarching theme of all the moderation criticism since FAU has tried his best, only stopped by lowtax, to completely shut the topic down because he doesn't like it. Even if it's off in it's own subforum.

Yet dozens of people have paid $10 to register to read it, hundreds of dollars have been spent on custom avatars. One guy has been banned probably 5+ times now. Regardless of it's insufferable autism it is a net benefit for the forums that nobody is required to read that is buried in one of dozens of sub-subforums completely out of sight.

Nope, an admin doesn't like it. If lowtax didn't think it was a funny topic he wouldn't have protected it, like a huge list of other funny threads that have been killed in exactly the same way by exactly as bad of judgement.

Every time you are banned (not probated, but actually banned), you have to spend another ten bucks to re-buy your account.

You can change another user's avatar picture for ten dollars. You can change your own avatar picture for five dollars. So, people become pissed off enough at someone to change that person's avatar to something insulting, and then that person eventually changes it back. That's $15 in the pot. Also, keep in mind that I'm pretty sure admins can change avatars for free.

For what it's worth, I don't believe the administrators and moderators abuse their power for these money reasons. They don't see a dime of it anyway. They abuse their power for other reasons.

I should say that not all of the mods are bad. But the good ones are usually buried in particular niche subforums, where they were promoted from within, and they are good ones because they very rarely dish out any probations or bans.

The first thing I tell new mods is: "Don't look for something to. Problems will find you." It's really hard for new moderators to just not do shit, but restraint is required.

There should be some sort of administrative figure in Something Awful to give similar guidance.

It's somehow some kind of victory that Ralp was allowed to be the worst moderator in the history of written language until he got tired of it? How do you not see that's the problem people are complaining about?

It's almost like instead of waiting for a mod to slowly give in to the absolute corruption that a tiny amount of power on a dying gay forum can bring, Richard is just letting FagsAreUseless install people who already have the correct opinions and are willing to use their power to harass wrongthinkers out of the forum.

Real Talk: I am a far leftist progressive and I find this place funnier/more welcoming than SA. Food for fucking thought here.

Yeah, for context for kiwis: every time the mods drive someone away or close one of the megathreads they hate so much they literally lose him money. He let's his unpaid volunteers burn his money! It's hilarious!
This is a damn good point. Megathreads, for all the mods shit on them, are huge moneymakers. Crafted by the finest autists, their megathreads had tons of useful information and I felt my hand forced to throw down tenbux when the paywall randomly went up one day.

Why on earth would you let any volunteer moderator close them? You might as well throw money into a furnace.

They should have listened to friggin Lowtax. It's not like he came in and called them all cunts, he told them some guidelines on what constitutes hatespeech and what doesn't. And they flipped out at that.
