Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

I understand that perfectly well; I'm just saying it's a bad thing because it excuses mediocrity in storytelling if they can rely on waifus. Plus it's not good to watch oversexualized media.

This sentence is pinnacle closet fag and is absolutely retarded.

At most you can call fanservice a crutch but even then a crutch doesn't mean the quality is worse.

Holy TSMT! It sucks because Macross had amazing potential to be the coolest show ever, but it became one of the earliest examples of the rot that plagues anime today in that it it's unable to take the engineering and sociological concepts it wants to present to a meaningful level and it has infantilized characters. Hikaru looks 8 years old, Minmay looks 7 years old,
Hikaru and Minmay look like literally any other anime teenager from the 70s or 80s. Are you just face blind? Minmay is a BPD loser hence why she rightfully loses, but I don't think she's too bad by 70s/80s standards. She ends up a better person by the ending anyway.
and all the things it could explore about plane engineering, alien technology, and how culture ends war were thrown out for some gay love triangle
Okay so you've never seen Macross given it devotes plenty of explanations to how the VFs work, how all the alien tech on the Macross itself works, and episode after episode deals with the whole Protoculture and the Zentradi lack of culture that makes them so vulnerable. I only wish the average anime, mecha or not, approached its setting, technology, engineering, and sociology with the detail and attention that Macross does AND insert it coherently without feeling like an infodump or detracting from the characters.

Very true and we have the same problem in the west. People had lives and then made fiction based on their lives. Now people just read fiction and want to write more fiction. The whole "Tolkien fought in a war" and JRRMartin was just a fat fuck.
I think it was the internet that killed creativity so badly. There was derivative slop in past decades, but even the weirdest freaks had to go outside and talk to people. Now, you can do nothing but stay inside, consoom, and then crap out a new product based on what you've consoomed because there's nothing interesting in your life that you can write about.

Started reading BLAME! recently. Don't know if it will get too weird or disappointing later on, but so far its pretty good.

Here's the first chapter.
I have it half read... and it honestly feels like a slog. Very impressive drawing of scenery (characters not so much) and I can't deny there is a huge air of mystery, but it's just not managing to grab me.
The first episode's rape aliens sure, last episode's not really. Their initial entrance had me laughing but I was pretty quickly going "oh shit". It doesn't really bother me because like I mentioned before, they're villains, I can give it a pass, but it was kinda wild.

I actually remember seeing it out of context on Twitter before I knew what it was, when I watched it in the show it dawned on me I already saw it. Apparently it caused some controversy among the usual crowd.
Dandadan going full pedal to the metal from the first second I think is one of it's prime virtues. As for the season ending. Those motherfuckers knew what they were doing. I assure you Momo will take less than 5 minutes to get out of that pickle, but they left it in the middle to get people hunting for manga volumes the moment Granny cat music started playing.
Yeah. I was thinking to myself, "well I had no problem with her being beaten up and almost killed, so this shouldn't make me raise an eyebrow". I mean, physical violence and certainly murder are worse than rape, after all. But thinking about it, the violence was all very fantastical, whereas the rape was played fairly straightly/realistic aside from maybe the men's exaggerated entrance.
It's all about presentation at the end of the day. Violence can be horrible, hype or comical depending on how it's presented on screen. Same deal with any sexual content which can go from disgusting, to comical to sexy. Tone tends to do a lot when it comes to conveying a scene. This doesn't mean "anything goes as long as there is a laugh track" either mind you. But in Dandadan's cases, specially the episode 12 cliffhanger was to make you feel terrified.
Maybe a slower buildup to the first ghost/alien could've worked but I kind of appreciated the fast pacing personally. What I would've liked is the two MCs' relationship sprouting more slowly instead, she's ready to risk her life for a guy whose name she quite literally didn't even know and is obsessed with the nerd in no time. She's clearly supposed to be hot and he's a scrawny awkward geek, so there's nothing to really attract her so quickly.

Another thing, I'm tired of characters getting their super forms from an external source, often an antagonistic one that becomes their buddy. I saw this shit a mile away when he first transformed, not because I'm so smart but because it's the most braindead pattern recognition ever.

Also, the power scaling is retarded, bitch can't walk some stairs but can get beaten to a pulp and keep fighting? Makes no sense. I also get no sense of where characters compared to each other, it's all a bunch of gimmicks and just doing whatever the story calls for at the moment, not a lot of logic involved.

I probably sound like I hate this show but I like it a lot.
I suggest you just enjoy the ride. Momo and Okarun are adorable to see bounce of each other. And well, as for what does Momo see in him... he is an awkward guy after all.

Also, don't give a shit about power levels here. Just enjoy the insanity unfold, this is one of those series where my brain doesn't give a shit about power levels, just about where the hell something is going, and it's so much better for it.

I'd hit that.

What I'm saying and you are saying are complementary factors. People live more mundane lives, substitute their mundanity with media and entertainment and get validation for only focusing on these highs they get from media and entertainment in online bubbles that make them think that not having any sort of social skills and adult responsibility is acceptable instead of pathetic.

Don't tempt the Japs, they already made a show where the MC was a literal vending machine. I don't know if the world is ready for brick-chan
What do you mean? The majority of japanese protagonists already have the personality of a brick wall even when they aren't self inserts.

People die when they are killed remember?

I like fanservice in anime. I just don't like when it gets excessive to where the main story becomes permanently derailed and crashes off a cliff because of it. Just watch porn at that point.

Lol good one. Maybe in shows for younger audiences like Pokemon they should be more mindful, but there's a place for more risque designs in mature anime.

Why is Freeza so damn small?
I think it's a simple subversion of expectations. He was a huge scary monster but became a sleek, creepy little guy upon transforming again.

Oh of course, there's no way anything too bad happens to her. It almost worked on me, but I decided not to search out the manga and instead just wait for the anime, it ain't too far off.

Yeah, I'm just taking it for what it is and enjoying it, these are mostly nitpicks and personal hangups. I just personally hate bad power scaling, because it's just the equivalent of watching a kid smash his action figures together without logic. You can just skip the battles at that point unless they look cool.

That's weaksauce my dude. Brick-chan has to be a literal brick with twintails and the UwU face carved in. I can already see the body pillow market being unable to keep up.
It'd still look prettier than western female designs lmao

It would be pretty edgy to instead of doing "main character dies in season 1 end" doing "heroine is raped in season 1 end", but it's so controversial it would never happen.

I'm just shocked we don't have a Brick-chan yet given we have literal soda waifus.

I'm tempted to watch that now just to see if Mountain Dew is a character lol.

Pretty much agree man.

Completely fair take. Pokemon, yeah I get that.

And despite how stupid the concept was, the story still treated the vending machine like an unironic hero despite being tongue-in-cheek. Never change, isekai.

Tom's Hardware: VLC demos AI-generated subtitles as it hits new milestone of 6 billion downloads (archive)

This is particularly noteworthy for anime fans, as it will allow users who don’t speak Japanese to watch titles which may not have been picked up by western publishers. Similarly, users who don’t trust western localizers will have the option to watch without the “official” subs and instead rely on machine translation.

Also making a literal Brick-chan would mean that Tekking101 will be able to give Barry D. Brick a wife. No I will not elaborate on this lore.
Tekking, the guy who literally didn't want to say "SS" on a stream because of the nazis.... He wasn't talking about nazis, but just two "S"s being together actually made him uncomfortable and he refused to say it... America is so doneso, the youth utterly burnt brained.

Not in something as mainstream and colorful as this, especially not nowadays. The only anime I know of where the MC is raped is Berserk, when a fag raped him, which is extra crazy since he was a kid when it happened too.

Actually, I only read the manga so maybe the anime skipped that.

Completely fair take. Pokemon, yeah I get that.
Yeah, not that there were really any particularly sexualized characters there anyway. One could argue the manga did, but not really the anime.

Nintendo let some wild shit happen with manga, really. Even Mario had some relatively risque elements.

Fucking finally, this sounds incredible. Total Wokealizer Death.

I'd also add Redo of Healer, where one of the many fucked up things that leads to main character's revenge story is being left alone with Bullet, the gun hero who is a gay pedo rapist priest and becomes unhealthily fixated on MC (he keeps kidnap/rape/killing young boys who look like MC)

If you've ever read a shitty MTL translation of a VN before you'd know that this is next to useless and you'd be better off downloading a fansub or learning Japanese than using this. You own some retarded localizers but at the end you have to deal with a product that is unparsable. You lose either way.
