There's clearly something wrong with her. I always assumed it was just spoilt housewife syndrome. Husband pays some flunky to come in and take care of the kids/housework and she gets accustomed to doing fuck all. But then when the money's all gone and it's time to get your finger out and start pulling your weight, what kind of woman continues to get xanaxed off her face and lie in her pit watching Deep Space 9?
That said, I was struck by Ralph's claim that April was an 'upgrade'.
Kayla might have had a shedload of kids, she might be more than ten years older, she might have serious mental health problems and a penchant for getting railed by niggers at every available opportunity, but there's still no earthly universe in which I can see April as some kind of improvement over her.
I've never seen her as "spoilt housewife." She's inane and catatonic and a sap for hanging on to Nick, but nothing in that house has ever seemed "spoilt" (except Nick's purchases for himself). Maybe she shops a lot, bc a million small purchases is something more easily digested (and
allowed) than big purchases like unused "business" equipment or craptastic art or useless mid-life crisis cars, purchases that only the lord of the manor may order. Her (always expensive) plastic surgery may have had a side effect of making her feel good (for herself or to gain her husband's approval and interest), but make no mistake: any procedures were intended for Nick's benefit. And even that wasn't enough for him; that was just part of opening up another venue for his benefit. And out of that, what happened? Kayla's lover noped out, and Nick, until it became legally untenable, kept his "girlfriend" and is on the warpath against Kayla's dalliance.
She's a fucked up ragdoll of a person, and both of them (Nick and her) devalue, dismiss, and disregard her as a person.
And no, this isn't some apologetic for Kayla. She has gone along with/ was an active participant in everything, and whether stupid or weak or enabling or whatever, she has extrinsic responsibilities to her children, even if she refuses any to herself. She's failed at those.
Her defining characteristics are weakness and somehow being dumber than her manipulative husband, not so much being spoiled.
