It lost steam because Blizzard was entirely focused on balancing the game for what would look good on screen for their stupid ass astro-turfed pro e-sport overwatch league(that basically ruined the already growing independent esports leagues that had adopted the game or begin to pop up). Going as far as to push the game balance to revolve around timing for everyone to hit their ults at once just so it would always be on screen and they wouldn't have footage of someone doing something boring. Meanwhile the entire OWL thing blew up in their faces and as I recall got sold off to some bullshit saudi investors. This wasn't even specific to Overwatch, as Blizzard had already done the same thing nuking Starcraft 2 as an e-sport(when SC:Broodwar had practically been a korean national passtime at one point), and also failed with their astro-turfed college e-sport Heroes of the Storm league(heroes of the dorm or some dumb shit) that was never going to compete with LOL and DOTA due to the map variation, lack of store, leveling balance, etc. but actually had a casual following that didn't require any investment on their part.

The lack of PvE that players had been demanding, and blizzard said they were doing, but then cancelled when "OW2" launched unnecessarily just made the hill that the game was already rolling down even more steep than previously.

The coomer weirdos just ignored all of the bullshit genderblobs and androgynous whatevers that got added to the game later.
