Live updates: Brush fire burns in Pacific Palisades as Santa Ana winds blast Southern California - Live video at link

(Unless they are street trees. Then the city/utility will do them... maybe, depends on the city/utility. But if they're on your property it's your responsibility.)
The entity that owns the power line is responsible for dealing with any trees that encroach on their easement. If something gets within Minimum Approach Distance only the power utility or a certified utility arborist can touch it. At distribution level, some power utilities will, on request, cut down trees that aren't in the easement if they have a clear issue that threatens their lines.
We're still pretty damned antsy about the Palisades Fire making its way into the SFV over here at Casa de Archeops, I really hope that the line they've set up around Mulholland stays strong and that the additional 2% containment it's gotten covers the north/northeast side of the blaze.
One of the thousand things I hate about Cal Fire is how little real info they put on their incident pages. I have never seen a map on a Cal Fire incident page.

Compare to the USFS/LAcoFD run Eaton fire where I can get you daily fire progression and PIO maps in 30 seconds

Ok, so I know the closest fire to them was already put out (Sunset,) but what would happen if the La Brea Tar Pits (The The Tar Tar Pits) got lit up? I know just tossing a match in there wouldn’t do anything, but a raging forest/urban fire seems like it could be a problem. There’s a lot of museums and cool stuff (and people) in that area so I’m not exactly rooting for it to go, but I have to admit I’m extremely curious.

Honestly, it seems like both. This is how we do powerlines in Australia. Maybe they should actually look at the country with the flammable trees, since we're probably the ones who would know.

We have firebreaks in the US as well, at least everywhere I've lived. The issue with this storm is the winds

I’ll bear the moral burden of rooting for it in your place.

It’s going to take a fucking lot of damage for there to be some remote chance of this leaving a lasting impression that translates into “durr maybe competent governance is kinda important”

The reason it doesn’t rain a lot in California is because if it did, most of them would drown from staring up at it with their slack jaws hanging open. God has a sense of humor and doesn’t completely destroy lolcows

Yes, a wildfire is plenty hot enough to ignite the tar/asphalt pits, which also leak methane (yay explosions!) and extend like 50 square miles iirc? Centralia West!

(Sadly this will never happen, La Brea is so far away from current fires that there would already be massive LA destruction and the tar pits catching fire would be anticlimactic at that point...)

You know the way things went down and how long it took to get here with all the warnings in the world, one has to wonder if Mel Gibson was right when he said this shit was all arranged and intentional. It makes better sense at this point that all these Democrat politicians responsible are playing dumb rather than just being genuinely stupid, which also explains why they're so gung ho about controlling the narrative.

This smells like a land grab conspiracy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized how fucking retarded this shit is. When I was a kid I had a friend who had to wear hearing aids occasionally and his mom was deaf or pretty close to it so it was some genetic thing I guess but she would use sign language and never made any of these retarded faces these people use. She would look at you and mouth the words and use her hands and it was pretty easy to understand what the hell she was trying to tell you. They even had captions on their TV through whatever service they used and it was completely undistracting, unlike these clowns they throw up stage. I think it really must be purposely a distraction technique at this point because they always look like a someone making fun of a deaf person not someone who actually knows what the fuck they are doing.
So some deaf people are just very expressive as part of their communication style, and that's totally fine. But a lot of the interpreters overdo it, and it's like disability drag, lol. I know what you're talking about, too; it's called Meniere's disease (the genetic disease), one of the leading causes of deafness. I think having an interpreter around is a throwback to the days when there were high illiteracy rates among the Deaf/HoH. Still, even people who are born deafblind now can communicate pretty well (there's tactile sign language; most people also use this tappy type haptic brail input on their devices; it's pretty amazing.)

Your friend and his mom were able to do lipread because they were probably "mainstreamed" or grew up, went to school, etc., around hearing people. Some Deaf people have minimal contact with the hearing world and will not develop the ability to lipread (or may have other issues that prevent them from doing so.) Many are just in their communities, and then you've got weird people who become interpreters and "part" of the community. That whole shit is insane. It's not Deaf people's fault they're siloed either; they were kept out of regular schools for the longest time and isolated, so there's a well-developed culture of separation from the "hearing world," especially among intergenerational Deaf families.

Updated my compilation image as of yesterday. It's gotten so big I will have to start adding any new info vertically instead of horizontally, I never really expected it to be so huge lmao

This is Poe's Law in action: Sure, it could be a conspiracy, not just a land grab either but something more sinister. OR it could just be California incompetence, with California diversity hires making things worse when the fire was set in action. It could be something in-between, like my pet theory of an antifa arson going wrong, but I guess we won't know until the ashes cool down, if ever. One thing that isn't changing is that the political career of everyone involved might as well be over, no matter how much Newsom flails about.

I haven’t seen anyone mention yet that the Eaton fire is getting pretty close to JPL, though they probably won’t let it burn. Also, if it gets into San Fernando that could be bad.

It seems that a new theory regarding the origins of the Palisades Fire is coming up: it was started from the lingering embers of a smaller blaze that was put out in the same area and that fire was started by New Year's Eve fireworks. Here's an article from the San Francisco Chronicle on it.
One major utility in the region, Southern California Edison, is examining whether transmission lines near the origins of the Eaton and Hurst fires could have sparked either blaze. On Thursday evening, SCE told state regulators that insurance companies demanded the company preserve electric equipment as possible evidence in the Eaton Fire, though it emphasized that no investigation has found evidence that its equipment ignited the fire. SCE did not mention the Hurst Fire in the report.
On Saturday, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced it will lead the investigation into the cause of the Palisades fire, taking over from local authorities. While the cause is unknown, a possibility has emerged: that the blaze was rekindled many days later from embers that smoldered, undetected, following a New Year’s Day fire that had been thought to be extinguished.
The fires broke out amid a blustering siege of Santa Ana winds. The area was primed to burn after more than eight months without meaningful rain. Southern California Edison had cut power to some areas but not others as a fire prevention measure.
Here’s what we know about the potential causes of some of the biggest wildfires:

Palisades Fire

The Palisades Fire broke out about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on a brushy hillside between a residential street and a ridgeline trail in Temescal Gateway Park with sweeping views of the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Monica Bay. The 23,713-acre fire has destroyed at least 5,300 structures and killed two people.
The fire broke out on the same dry hillside where, six days earlier, another fire had occurred, which nearby residents attributed to New Year’s fireworks. That nine-acre blaze was contained in about four hours; firefighters left 16 hours after it began and considered the fire extinguished. But experts told the Chronicle this weekend that it’s conceivable that a rekindling of undetected smoldering embers, even many days later, could have sparked the Palisades Fire.
A spokesperson for the ATF, which is now the lead agency on the investigation into the fire cause, said it was “way too early to make any determinations.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department said last week that its arson investigators were examining the brushy hillside near Pacific Palisades where the fire started. Arson investigators — also called fire investigators — determine how and where fires ignited, whether by power lines, a tossed cigarette or any of the other ways people or human infrastructure cause fires, either on purpose or accidentally. It doesn’t necessarily mean the fire involved criminal arson.

Los Angeles Water and Power Department manages electric service to the community. Many power lines and transmission lines are buried underground in the area.
The article continues to cover the other fires but this one stood out.

If it turns out that personal NYE fireworks ultimately caused the current blaze then that changes my opinion on them from "eh, it's not my problem" to "ban the fuckers".

Not including the goats is illegal.

His life was worth more than any of these LA actors.
You know what? I think we need to be serious about the tragedy that these celebrities are facing right now. We need to help these people, just as they helped us during trying times. Everyone, get out a webcam and start singing a shitty rendition of "Imagine".

The fire.ca.gov map says no updates since 6:57 on my end, have the firelines stalled that much or is there something going on leaving them worried about updating the boundaries when they were doing regular updates the whole day until now

I'm really excited to see the long term numbers on taxes next year in the state. With so many businesses gone, and employees, it's going to be a real wonder what programs survive when that exorbitant tax ratecross hairs.substantially. There's no way Trump will allow a government bailout either, he has California in his crosshairs.

That’s a graph showing that since the 1880’s, LA has never had 45” of precipitation in a year.

In the same time span, Boston has never had less than 30”.
