He wants the prestige of being "the smartest man in the room" and wants games to be another "skill" to add on to that image. He could have picked chess (another game very linked with the ego of intelligence) but the problem is that those games are easily measurable in skill and people are very observant in cheating at it. If he were to say "I'm a Grand Master chess player" it's very easy to analyze how his games don't match, though he would get that "smartest man in the room" prestige.

He picks up mainstream games to gain more "widespread" appeal and because it's not as easy to tell when you are a really, really good player, and also to craft more of a "relatable bro gamer" image.
