I was thinking a fangame. You come to the first obstacle, tutorial prompt tells you to cast a spell to overcome it, you do, your character refuses saying "Not enough mana", game over.

Wow, super late to this thread. I played heart bound around 2018 when it was released on steam and was shocked by how short the game was. There was only about 7 hours of content if I remember and everything else wasnt finished. Insane that a game of this *insane* caliber wasnt finished years ago.

Someone else in the thread said it already but this method is actually worse than generating passwords with something like KeepassXC. His passwords already leaked, he uses the same password in many places and its not even difficult to crack.

I hate redditors nitpicking about code. "Oh no a global!" is cargo cultism hangover from OOP ideology. Lookup Tables are a classic time-space tradeoff technique. Is Yandere Simulator slow because of too many if statements or is it because of more banal stuff like not having good object culling and level of detail, or things being constantly loaded and unloaded out of VRAM due to improper engine use. My bet is that it's the latter. No one is pushing hardware with their games, they're just using the engine incredibly poorly because they don't really understand what they're doing. Maybe that's a reason you should try making your own.

I don't disagree with the first part of your comment but there's a massive difference between using large if else blocks (which I agree is kind of just fine) vs using a global array that encodes most of your state, with only *comments* as a way to actually know what the thousands of items mean.

It doesn't save you time or gets optimized by your compiler. It's just a sure way to either get bugs or want to kill yourself after the game starts being complicated. I can't even think of a single IDE feature that would magically make the comment you added to define what index 1972 of the list is. If anything, a hashmap where you can just use strings as keys would be much better, but less efficient. So the only reason to do it the way he is doing is either autistic "performance" reasons or just incompetence. It doesn't make development faster (I mean, his game is 10 years in the making so the regular game dev excuse for poor code doesn't even apply here).

Anytime I feel self conscious about my creative output, I don't need toxic positivity "uwu take it one day at a time" Bluesky/Twitter posts to feel better about myself. I just have to remember shit like Heartbound exists and Mald can't even spend more than 15 fucking minutes working on the game, (and calling it "working" is generous since he's just fucking failing to get Game Maker working???) with all the free time and nepobaby resources and sycophant paypig followers that any struggling indie would fucking KILL for.
