Careercow Jonathan "Full" McIntosh / RadicalBytes - "Pop Culture Detective", Cucked hard by Anita Sarkeesian, King Snowflake

Who the hell gets to decide what "the idea it represents is," though? Hopefully not PedoDan and crew.

That's the big question. They don't really mean it when they say that the meaning is subjective, though, it only applies when they or their SJW pals assign a particular meaning to a given work - if they really believed that meaning is inherently subjective, then every meaning you could derive from a particular work would be equally valid (or invalid). For some reason, this seems to be an either/or proposition for most people; it doesn't seem to occur to them that authorial intent can be a factor in any work.

Which is sad, because there isn't anything stopping people from enjoying both. This is really spergy, but Final Fantasy 8 has the "Squall is Dead" theory, which most people seem to be able to enjoy while simultaneously enjoying how batshit the story as laid out by the writers is.

He also doesn't seem to understand that South Park is a comedy. You don't go to comedy for moral instruction on how to live your life; you go to comedy to laugh.

I'm sure Joshintosh has very strong opinions about how comedy should carry moral instructions, especially if they're the kind that "make white heterosexual cis men uncomfortable," he's just too busy REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEing about vidya and movies to share them. (and it probably makes him uncomfortable every time Amy Schumer says "vagina")

BUT MUH PUNCHING UP!!!!! [/sarcasm]

Still baffles me she was taken seriously
She targeted video games, which has a high percentage of autists. Autists can't not overreact to her bullshit and scream like babies about it. And then money grubbing opportunists create their psuedo red pill "i've got a roman bust for an avatar" rebuttal videos which the autists watch obsessively. Sarkesian then redistributes their rebuttals into more bullshit, autists cry over it, psuedo red pills make another video, thus creating a self sustaining economy of bullshit on bullshit.

Three years later trump is elected. Good job Anita.

Most of the criticisms of her I've watched I agree with though. She seems to be a bullshit peddler to the max. However I do agree people turned her bullshit into a cottage industry to debunk since it's so easy to refute and most of her critics have become trash now

Trash makes more trash, makes more trash. It's all people crying about fucking videogames. Getting angry about fucking videogames.

You obviously aren't a fan of video games, so let's put aside for a second what the specific hobby being targeted is...

Is it really that unreasonable that people would react negatively to their hobbies being trashed as some sort of malevolent source of all kinds of social problems? Especially by someone who demonstrates all the hallmarks of a being a demagogic con woman and yet was given money, forums and media coverage?

My rhetorical question here obviously isn't meant to defend each and every reaction to her as a lot of it has been absurd (I just joined and Davis Aurini was the second lolcow I ridiculed). But negative reactions and criticism are justified. Not death/rape threats by weebs or tedious 2 hour long diatribes by MRAs, but comments to the effect that she's an idiot and con artist.

Not to mention that gaming, for decades, has been blamed for everything up to and including mass murder, so enthusiasts might have something of a defensive streak.

Gameplay above storyline. Nobody buys a game for a movie where you press the A button once every quick time event, unless the story has serious choices in it.
There are a few games that do this bery well---Heavy Rain & the Zero Escape series (999, Virtue's Last Reward, & Zero Time Dilemma). Do you consciously saw off your own finger to save your son? Do you kill your husband to save your daughter, or let him live while you both watch your daughter burn to death in an incinerator? Granted, there's actual gameplay in all these games, but the focus is more on the story.

Just my two cents, but there's more to games than just straight-up gameplay.

Oh I'm a fan, I just don't care about the moral panic bullshit or the reactionary screaming about it. I find it funny. The defensive streak is what we laugh at when cows sperg out. She trolled the gaming community and got paid for it, good on her for that.

To be fair, there is danger that game companies will listen to objections by feminists/SJWs and start modifying their games to suit them. They are well represented in academia and Feminist Frequency somehow got connections with Intel and the United Nations. Corporations frequently bow to pressure from vocal minorities.

That said, the best way to oppose them is just to tell game companies that these people may not represent their target audience. Someone has to at least voice that position.

It's certainly possible SJWs/feminists might be the target audience of some games (see Gone Home), but it's absolutely ludicrous to demand every game cater to them.

Just look at all these nonsense Overwatch "controversies." I haven't played the game, don't intend to and don't care what the content of it is. I have never once made any effort to deliberately look up anything in relation to Overwatch.

Yet I can't seem to log into Reddit or Facebook without seeing the latest culture wars bullshit around that goddamn game (incidentally this is also why playing it seems about as attractive to me as drinking bleach). If anyone needs evidence that this SJW lobbying has had a tangible impact on AAA games, there you have it.

Overwatch is a bad example because Blizzard doesn't actually care about SJW shit and is deliberately stirring the pot for press. The game itself is pretty free of all of that nonsense.

There's a case to be made on how AAA titles are being skewed by a soc jus agenda but there are a billion and a half other bigger problems on current vidya. None of which I'll go into here because this thread is about Cuckintosh, not early access.

Oh, I fully agree that it's a conscious and cynical move on their part. But that's not really relevant because regardless of the sincerity of their motivations, game devs are accounting for this Gamergate/Anti-Gamergate crap nonetheless in their marketing efforts.

These last chunks of posts are exactly what Josh wanted, and got. Turned it into money.

Riling you all up is the whole point. Getting people to be emotionally invested in bullshit is how Josh cashed in, it's how all these internet statues as avatar weird ass pol types are cashing in, it's how your time gets wasted on being all twisted up over this silly silly shit.

Your games aren't going anywhere. They're not changing. You're being conned for youtube clicks. It's the internet equivalent to your parents obsession with AM talk radio.

Huh? Where did you get the sense that anyone on this page is flipping out over this?

We seem to all be in agreement that the likes of McIntosh and Sarkeesian used strategic trolling and manufactured culture war controversy to rabble-rouse and create "thought leader" positions for themselves to profit from. And yeah, harassing them or taking them super seriously plays right into their narrative. That's not exactly a revelation. I'm not worked up about this and don't care all that much about them except to the extent that they, their supporters, and their detractors provide me with a few cheap laughs (if being mildly entertained by having a Thunderf00t video playing in the background while I clean my kitchen constitutes "being conned," I guess I'm a sucker). I didn't see anyone else (in this page at least, not going back through this whole thing) taking the bait either.

But cultural attitudes do influence media, and marketers pay attention to cultural trends and adjust products accordingly. These are pretty basis concepts. I'm not saying that McIntosh and Sarkeesian have the power to completely turn anything in the video game industry upside down, or that even if they could this would be a weighty issue. But they are actively campaigning for certain things about the industry to change, and the extent of favorable media coverage and donations that at least Sarkeesian (to my knowledge McIntosh has been far less successful turning this into cash) has gotten is something will be on any competent AAA game marketing person's radar.

Art emerges from a cultural context. How is it somehow automatically "sperging out" or whatever just to acknowledge that much? I didn't respond to you to go "muh vidya games," but rather just to challenge the assertion that anyone who reacts negatively to them at all must necessarily be an autist.

Not supposed to be a revelation.

Yep. That is the con. "lemme give greesey haired dude some cash to listen to positions I already agree with about internet slap fights" thats pretty funny.

And whats that gotta do with 900 reactionary weirdos with their awful and pointless and endless youtube channels? Why does, using your example, Thunderfoot need over 100 videos dedicated to Anita... oh... click money.

You're buying into this idea that you're fighting a culture war by listening to someone talk. You're not. Instead you're an audience for a product. It's not about games, it's not about anything you're saying it's about-- it is about that sweet sweet click money and manufactured outrage.

And the negative response is what they want, and when they get it you're the sucker for the con.

Personally I just find them mildly entertaining when I can't think of any other background noise. I'll listen to them for the exact same reason that I'll browse this site. I thought people who posted on a forum about lolcows would understand that.

What an evil, manipulative conspiracy that I'm tricked into giving content creators a fraction of a cent for each youtube view.
