What designating them as terrorists does is allow for the DoD, which is a massive umbrella, to use its resources against them without having to go through bureaucratic hoops. Nothing else has been said beyond that.

But yeah my take on all this "omg the cartels will kill americans if we attack them" is that it's a moronic take. Salvador wrangled its cartels. If they attack US citizens they're provoking a giant that is much bigger than anything they've ever faced. The cartel leaders want to be filthy rich, not dead and Solemani is an example of what Trump is willing to do.

This stuff has happened plenty of times before. When people form militias the cartels don't tend to fight them head on. They disappear and wait for the militias to disband.

With the terrorist label being attached to them, it is 1000000% more harder for them to disappear. Anyone who gives them support has to have clout on the same level as the US gov. Mexico has failed to discipline their problems, so now a real country is stepping in to do it. And they wont be as kind.

I've had to deal with a number of supposed "conservatives" on my end; it's a 50/50 on whether they'd try and help, or just not do anything at all.
