Good morning, USPG! What a great way to start my day: illegals getting deported en masse and lazy federal workers getting deported. I know some federal workers (mostly researchers) and they have worked in their labs for years. They want to show up for work because they want to do their research.

The Japanese have far fewer taboos about sex than Western countries. The perverts in their society are seen as just that: perverts. Single men obsessed with anime and trap porn are not regarded well. However, because of the public-private divide in their society, you can be a pervert in private so long as you keep it a secret and so long as your public face is good: married, good job, and kids.

There are far more normal, productive members of Japanese society than we see in America because what we get is tranime and J-pop stuff. It's like how Europeans judge Americans based on the TV shows and movies they consume. However, because there are fewer taboos about sex, perverts and weirdos are mocked and bullied rather than hated. So long as perverts and weirdos don't violate authority, they are treated more like clowns or curses rather than affronts to God.

it's been a while, so you probably don't remember (or were too young) about what happened around 20 years ago. the hysteria wasn't nearly as bad as covid but there was rightful concern: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H5N1#2003

it can infect mammals (as in, cats) including humans after contact. so more sick birds around -> more contact -> higher chance of infection -> possible spread among non-birds and adaption. simple numbers game.
it makes a bit more sense when you consider the spanish flu was also an influenza A virus (H1N1), and flu inoculation and effectiveness depends on various factors - but at least the method is decades old, so no mrna stuff (you can be sure they gonna try tho).
after TPTB fucked around with covid for money and power you can assume public response will be even more muted, which if there really happens to be a severe outbreak, would be even worse. which means you'd want to prevent even getting to that point as much as possible.

EDIT: worth mentioning is that the flu still kills 100k-500k (depending on study) per year globally, so even if low there's still a chance.

The trains are nice and clean. The other people on the train are polite. It's inexpensive, convenient, and fast. You can get to your destination faster than if you were to drive and read or work or play games or whatever.

It's extremely expensive to own a car, park it and drive in Japan. Many places you would want to go simply don't have anywhere to park. You're paying a lot to get a worse mode of transportation.

I'm not saying that trains are better than cars. You couldn't pay me to ride a train or bus in the US. But the situation is entirely different in Japan.
