That’s propane. Was popular in random countries since the 80s - Italy, turkey, Netherlands for example. It’s pretty rare to see the pumps these days. I think most of the cause is that regular (benzin / gasoline) cars have doubled in fuel efficiency over that time and also became cleaner, and electric is better anyway, so governments stopped promoting it.

They rarely if ever explode.
What *does* explode is CNG converted cars and trucks - I saw a news clip of an exploding garbage truck in the US just a couple of weeks ago.

I do know that south americans drive on pure ethanol and also some times use LPG. In germany, classic american land yacht enthusiast sometimes drive on LPG.
I'm not sure what you need to do, but iirc, your car really only needs a carburator to chug LPG - modern fuel injected cars and diesel don't work - this makes a lot of sense, since south america is crowded with old gasoline chunkers, because they use ethanol so much.
Driving with conversions on outright Natural Gas is rare, the the retrofit is dangerous when done wrong, it's better to buy a car made for that - that's called CNG.

By LNG here you mean LPG (the P is for propane!) - the same thing as Autogas, same thing as BBQ gas.
It has a low boiling point but can be kept in a thin walled vessel at ambient temperature as its vapour pressure is also pretty low.

LNG is, just methane which has been liquified by very low temperatures (-260F) and is what is shipped around in huge vessels to supply countries. CNG is compressed natural gas, still the same methane, compressing it is the only way you can meaningfully store it in a small road vehicle where clearly you can’t have cryogenic flasks. For that, the pressure is incredibly high, much higher than for LPG.

That’s where you get the explosions, especially if anyone bodges the tank - you’re right about that.
