Mega Rad Gun Thread

Honestly best case I can see for this is a 10mm bear or hog gun
A buddy and I were hog/coyote hunting the other day and after some considerable bs'ing we decided that putting it on a suppressed ruger mk4 would be a decent idea for night time varmints. Would be a solid skunk or possum setup to keep the pains out of the chicken house.

Most thermal hunting in hog areas you want a rifle because it's not as easy to get close to them after the first time someone shoots at them. Bears I know next to nothing about.

man is there a way you can deter possums without having to shoot them? i'm just some random prick online and you've got a coop to keep, it is what it is, but the animal rehabilitation i help out with fucks me up enough to not want them hurt.
bright fucking lights that come on at them suddenly. they avoid those like the plague, but can get used to ones that are always on. strobes dazzle them easily as well as cause mild pain if exposed for more than a few seconds.

I get the sympathy for animals and if not for the chickens I might not care but, they will eat the chickens. Now they're not as bad the skunks in my experience but a penned up chicken is a really easy food source for a critter. So if you catch them around the chicken coop you usually want to off them. I don't go looking for them if they're not messing with stuff though. They aren't hogs.

yeah, that i get. i can't really say not to stop the hens from getting got. from what i know possums don't go there to kill chickens. they're there for eggs if anything but it's just the way of things if a hen freaks the fuck out at them.

For $6500 I'd much rather get something else, like one of those new Stg-44s being made in the US to original specs and on original tooling, or an Ohio Ordnance M1918A3 BAR. Honestly, I don't get the appeal of most Russian weapons.
VSS at least up until the advent of 300/8.6BO was something unique.

Things like the SVD I really dont get. Just a less accurate, less versatile, more costly AR-10.

Meeting/owning your heroes is always dangerous but I hope you end up loving it, buddy.
To put it bluntly, I wanted an Uzi a lot more until I actually got one.

I mean, yeah its still pretty cool... but if I actually want to do 9mm PDW stuff there are much better options out there, as the Uzi Pro with a brace weighs as much as an AR, lmao.

It checks the box tho, just like my AK.

My 1 Uzi in my collection is made in Israel, and my 1 AK is made in Russia, as God (or Satan) intended.

It's a very neat design. I would not use it in any competitive situation, but it's an interesting gun with an interesting background. We euros can get Chinese copies on the relative cheap (2300-600 eurobucks) and could get Russian civilian versions for even cheaper before the SMO. I've met people that tried to make it work with long-range sport shooting and they simply gave up, contemporary platforms are just better.

It's not a gun you get for performance, it's a gun you get for collection/amusement purposes. For Americans I guess it's even more so because it's difficult to own one and that adds to the mystique.

Now, if only I could get a cheap Saiga 9mm ....

Aesthetics have a heavier influence than you might think. It just has the right lines.
It's also similar to the M14 in the "Wood and Steel" mindset, that even the most fuddy of gun owners interpret as a badge of precision even if the SVD just for fire support.

you can easily get a PSL
The PSL is absolute crap, there is nobody who owns one that hasn't experienced buyer's remorse when they realize how poor it shoots. There have been enough "dragunov" listings for PSLs on Gubroker above MSRP in reserve because they either want their money back or know they have pyrite that gullible retards will fall for.

I have been made aware of another enhanced/upgraded Bolt/BCG offering, this time from a company called Leitner-Wise. They make some pretty big claims. The System is composed of their "Long Advance Bolt-Expanding Gas System" Bolt Carrier and "Combat Match Bolt" with proprietary enhanced Combat Match extractor. The Bolt Carrier's claim to fame is it's delayed unlocking achieved via altered campath geometry. They also claim that apparently most AR's made throughout history are actually improperly made as they say that their bolts only rotate 20.7 degrees instead of the proper 22 (like theirs does)
The Combat Match Bolt boasts enhanced bolt lugs and the previously mentioned proprietary and strengthened extractor. The Bolt is compatible with standard barrel extensions

I know it's bait, but both the PSL and the M76 are merely upscaled Kalashnikovs and by design they are inferior to the Drag. I'm a fairly terrible shot but between the three, in my personal experience, the Dragunov is the superior platform. What's even the point of buying a Dragunov look-alike if you get inferior performance? Even here they throw PSL at you trying to fuck people over with the "Romanian Dragunov" nonsense. Same story with Yugo "RPK variants", they aren't real RPKs.

I'd almost buy Chinese instead.

O Wise One I come seeking knowledge
How doe Excise taxes on firearm production work? You see, I've heard for years that you should never buy a complete assembled AR and always buy Uppers and Lowers seperately to somehow beat the excise tax, but Isn't the tax already paid by the manufacturer the second the aluminum hunk reaches the stage of completion where ATF considers it to be a firearm?

Best part is that since it's 30mm it is not a destructive device.
Yes it is, anything over 12.7mm (.50) in diameter is considered a DD unless otherwise given a sporting use exemption by the Attorney General.

I think I know what you mean. I have helped friends deal with predators or other harmful pests (coyotes, wild pigs) twice in the past. I didn't like killing the animals but after seeing how much they can fuck up a farm, I knew why it had to be done. That said, I never again volunteered to help with such things.

Changing gears to the modern guns,

The Henry Supreme doesn't offend me as much as it should. I kinda like it.
Could be the fudd in me, but I don't like box-magazine-fed lever guns. I think the Ruger American Ranch rifles do a better job of filling the niche these are trying for.

Paul Leitner-Wise definitely knows ARs as well as anyone ever could. Does one need his $400 BCG, which no doubt does all he says it does? Doubtful. I've personally either not worried about cam pin wear grooves on the inside of the upper, or I've replaced the cam pin with a POF roller cam pin when I could easily do so.

I feel Henry's box-fed rifles barely count as lever action with the rack and pinion setup they have, and I assume the Supreme is more or less the same. Ruger definitely has them beat on price and machining quality though, no arguments there.
