Cutting kids off from the internet completely is unfortunately not possible anymore, there's ways around parental locks and filters, etc, schools use computers, tablets and the internet for a lot of school work and homework these days. You can't always be hovering over your kids' shoulders.

I think it would be good for parents to know what to look for so they know how to talk to their kids.

Using the internet is a mandatory technology for life in the modern world and forbidding children to use it or act like it doesn’t exist in some tiny bubble you have created for them is retarded, unless you are Amish. It would be akin to forbidding a child in the 1700’s to learn to read due to the “evil influences and ideas” books could contain, or forbidding a kid in 1940 from having anything to do with electricity, telephones or radios. You don’t ban a technology integral to modern life just because it can be misused. A tool is a tool. (I figure all the 2nd amendment spergs here would know this reasoning by heart.)

If you aren’t lazy or stupid there are plenty of ways to monitor and restrict what a child can access online. It’s not hard to restrict all social media apps on devices and that seems to be where 90% of the problems lie. It’s not hard to check their online activity logs to see what they read, watch or interact with online. It’s not hard to limit the time they can spend online. There are plenty of ways to ensure a kid isn’t accessible to the worst people and places the internet has to offer if parents put in a modicum of effort.

A parents job is to foster independence and help their children think critically about the world they live in and what they will be exposed to in it. Imagine forbidding a kid from using the internet until the day they turn 18 and see how well prepared they are to handle living in a society where its use is integrated into almost every aspect of daily life and most forms of employment.
