I heard this argument on the radio this morning too and it really just shows how little they understand biology. I think they mean we all start out female because we come from eggs (???) An egg has only half the chromosomes necessary to make human life and is not viable until it fuses with sperm during conception so by definition it's not human. Even someone with Turner's syndrome has a full complement of chromosomes minus another X. How can ppl that reee about biology so much really be this dumb?

They say it not because of the egg thing, but because fetuses start out undifferentiated - not clearly male or female - and they wrongly interpret the lack of a penis / male sex organs as "female". Even a fetus at the stage where it has not developed physical sexed body parts still has a biological sex, and if the pregnancy continues on plan will develop along the lines of its biological sex.

They're not stupid, though - they don't say this because they don't know everything I just wrote, it's because it benefits them to lie about it and most people aren't educated enough to know they're lying so it sounds like the truth. They're manipulating people for their cause, and that's the whole point.

Trans ideology is religion for people who don't want to believe in god. It's entirely faith-based, just like any religion - you have to take it on faith that trans-identified males have "true female souls" or whatever, and so on. All of their "evidence" comes from biased, bullshit self-reporting surveys they regularly encourage each other to lie on, there's nothing scientific about it. It's liberal religion, for people who see themselves as too cool and cynical to believe in god. Instead they believe that straight white dudes wearing their moms' underwear while they masturbate to lesbian porn made by men for men are the second coming.

A stronger argument might be that an embryo is neither male nor female until it actually develops far enough to meet the usual gamete definition, since you have to wait long enough to know that no surprise intersex disorders are going to show up. That would be interesting, but that still doesn't support "everyone starts female"- that supports something much more complicated like "everyone starts expecting to be male or expecting to be female, but occasionally an intersex disorder flips it later".

You're sort of right, in that in the absence of an active SRY gene even a genetically male fetus will develop female-like features (Swyer Syndrome), but as you say, even fetuses at the point before the differentiation have a biological sex even though it isn't visible on examination or scan. I think it's better and more accurate to say that fetuses before that point are undifferentiated, rather than female, because fetuses at this stage also do not have female sex characteristics, and also because absent exceedingly rare disorders of sexual development, a male fetus will never develop along the "female" pathway nor will a female fetus develop along the "male" pathway.

The way that trans activists suggest it, that fetuses "start female," makes it seem like at a default a fetus has fully developed sex characteristics, ie uterus and ovaries, and then "changes" to be male at a later point, but that's not how it works. A fetus before the point of developing sex characteristics is "neutral," not female.

Not really. Even if your SRY is not "working" for whatever reason, you're still male in the end. In the most extreme cases where you end up with phenotypically female external genitalia, you'll still have internal testes.

(There are exceptions when it comes to people with XY who really do end up "female," but those involve the SRY being physically missing altogether due to an error during meiosis. So that's irrelevant here, because then the fetus had a different chromosomal makeup from the start.)
