UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I mean you have those rights but how you doing that with no phone at probably a stupid hour?
You have a right to phone the duty solicitor. Who is on a fixed price, and depends on the good will of the Police, CPS and Courts.

All those guys that pled guilty over the Southport Protests. That was courtesy of the nations 'duty solicitors'.

Bongcops do have a similar line but with a big fat BUT in it; "you do not have to say anything. But, it may harm your defence if you do not mention something which you later rely on in court". If you don't explain yourself this can be interpreted by the court however they feel like it. You have the right to remain silent yes but no right to not have it usedT
That was the original intention. That it simply allowed the court to consider that you chose to remain silent. Instead what happened is that the Judges had a chat over various dinner parties in North London, and decided that they could instruct the jury to ignore any evidence offered by 'certain' defendents if they didn't immediately mention it when questioned.

Courts don't even allow you to refuse to make questions untill you have a solicitor of your choice.

Been calling this for a while that the Lotus eater lot were going to be next (yes I know he left).
I just started watching them. I don’t get much new information out of them, but they’re pretty cozy to listen to. I hope they don’t all get arrested for saying raping kids is bad.

No, you don't have those rights if arrested under counter terrorism laws. You don't really have the right to silence in general as your silence can and will be used against you in the UK legal system.
There are actually a good view contexts in the UK where various levels of official, from a cop upwards, can compel you to provide an answer. The pin code for your phone for instance.

Not with force, but its a crime to fail to provide them with a suitable, truthful, answer and you'll get an automatic sentence for it.

Almost the next James Bond doing his bit for knife crime, as sponsored by the BBC.

Idris Elba on stabbing crisis: 'Not all kitchen knives need a point on them'

Note in the article the kid on the scheme is a white boy from Coventry. Yep, that's the typical knife user in the country - as always, you can trust the BBC.

As for not all kitchen knives need a point on them......that is a ridiculous statement on so many levels. The implication in that statement is that some can have points on, but not all. Surely for any legislation to be effective, you have to either ban all knives with a point or none at all. Or will it be that you can only have a point on your knife if you are over 18 and have the correct paperwork. Does that mean that adults will have to cut up every meal for children until they reach adulthood and suddenly can be trusted ?

"but you can still cut your food without the point on your knife, which is an innovative way to look at it." Innovative if you normally eat with your fingers and shit in the corner of the room possibly.

I do wonder if the BBC is trying to become Brass Eye but for real. It never ceases to amaze me what its top whores pundits will say to support their current hot topic. Has anybody told Idris about this new drug called cake and what it's doing to the kids ?
Perhaps the BBC could get Lineker involved, he must have something suitably patronising and idiotic to parrot, although he's probably too busy doing a baltimora......

I said about our government being very quick with new policies and spin, but it's getting stupid this month alone. We have Yvette brandish all terrorists as the same and from a stats approach that is insane. 94% of deaths, a report in 2018 says 67% which is still very high. This even for the police though is lunacy because obviously you'd focus on a certain demographic since there is a higher chance of causing it. Labour seems hellbent on labeling anything remotely centrist or conservative as wrong-think if it is not Islamic. Now you have this squad-like group in Labour appearing who are Islamic fundies. (I am totally sure this will not come back to bite them in the ass.)

We then have benchers openly revolting to Starmer about maintaining our American relationship. On top of that councillors oppose Starmer and internally beginning inquiry regarding rape gangs and trafficking. Then Starmer tries to put a license fee on people who use streaming which will only incentivise those streamers to leave because he wants to additionally tariff them. Now Rachel wants to build a third runway which Heathrow honestly does not need whilst trying to up council tax also.

Governments usually have some kind of consistency but this government is so batshit insane and inept at even understanding how the country is run. All this before the tax changes in April which is going to destroy SMEs and hammer the rest of the sector creating a surge in unemployment. It is affecting all sectors too, a group of unis around me are handing out voluntary severance packages to take paying handsomely. My old boss who runs an SME said they are looking at cutting 40% of staff from 110 to just balance and make sure the P&L is fine. I feel so bad for business owners because all they want to do is run their business but Rachel wants to be Annie Wilkes to them all.

King Cuck steps in to change the name of a submarine from HMS Agincourt (based) to HMS Achilles. This has apparently been done in a bid to avoid offending the French, lest it remind them of that time they got absolutely fucking minced in battle with the English.

Choosing to instead name an English Naval vessel after a mythological character who is most famous for his easily exploitable weakness is an amusing moment of unintentional honesty on the part of the MOD, given what's been happening in the Channel.

If it helps think about it like this. All of them, including Kier, know they are on borrowed time and that time gets shorter every day. The stabbings, the leaked reports, idiot MPs assaulting people in the street and councillors screaming for mass murder were not part of Labour's plans. For all they talk about their mandate the election was won by default, not due to their popularity, and the shine came off quicker than even they anticipated. So any clever plans they had have to be pushed into overdrive because every byelection keeps Kier up sweating at night.

Speaking of the government showing just how much contempt they have for the voters they're intervening in a case involving car loan lenders that's a potential repeat of the PPI situation. Naturally Labour, party of the people, wish to protect the lenders.
The government has intervened to stop car loan firms from potential multi-billion pound compensation payments over concerns they could have a significant and potentially damaging impact on the motor finance market.
Last year, the Court of Appeal said that lenders and dealers should have communicated clearly to customers how much commission they were making from selling loans, and compensate them when this did not happen.
MotoNovo and Close Brothers, two of the UK's biggest car finance firms, will appeal the ruling in April after hundreds of thousands more customers came to the financial regulator with similar complaints of being missold car loans.
The government said that while it wants to make sure customers get re-dress, it also wants the motor sector to be able to continue "supporting millions of motorists to own vehicles".
The vast majority of new cars sold in the UK, and many second-hand ones, are bought with finance agreements.
Some analysts estimate that total payments could reach as much as £30bn in a scandal that could end up being the largest compensation scheme regarding financial products since the payment protection insurance (PPI) saga.
As well as the size of the compensation bill, the Treasury's submission to the Supreme Court - which it confirmed to the BBC it has received - includes concerns that any uncertainty could undermine the UK's competitiveness.
It is understood that the Treasury's intervention could be to show that the UK is still a good place to do business and emerges as Chancellor Rachel Reeves is at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland to speak to world leaders.
Her budgetary decisions have not buoyed investors' confidence in the UK economy at as borrowing costs have soared.

Some customers have said the commission on car loans were agreed in secret.
Marcus Johnson, 34, from Cwmbran, Torfaen bought his first car - a Suzuki Swift - in 2017.
However, he said he was not informed that the car dealership was being paid 25% commission, which was added on to what he had to pay back.
"I signed a few documents and then drove away in the car," he told the BBC in November.
His was part of a landmark case with two other claimants, where the Court of Appeal ruled that the finance company should pay the hidden commission plus interest back to Mr Johnson.
He is due to receive just over £3,200.
In 2021, the Financial Conduct Authority banned deals in which the dealer received a commission from the lender, based on the interest rate charged to the customer.
It said this provided an incentive for a buyer to be charged a higher-than-necessary interest rate.
Since January last year, the regulator has been considering whether compensation should be paid to people with these deals before 2021.
That created the prospect of banks and other lenders having to make payouts totalling millions of pounds.
In October, the decision at the Court of Appeal broadened the net of those who could receive compensation, potentially increasing the lenders' final bill to billions of pounds.
The FCA has since been asking affected customers to make complaints, potentially meaning hundreds of thousands have come forward.
The car finance industry is setting aside huge amounts of money for possible future claims.
If multibillion pound fines are imposed on auto lenders, it could also lead to some finance companies going bust, thereby undermining the competitiveness of the market.
Two of the biggest firms in auto loans saw their share prices rise after details of the government's intervention emerged.
Lloyds Banking Group's share price rose by nearly 4% while Close Brothers' stock jumped 21%.

Renaming the sub to appease the frogs is a cuck move, but the name isn't an issue by itself. Achilles was a mighty warrior and bowman, which is appropriate for any vessel of war. There's a fine history of vessels named HMS Achilles, including the Achilles that fought in the battle of the silver river in 1939 (why people insist on calling it the "river plate" is beyond me). It's just a shame she ended up in the Indian navy.

Now calling it the HMS Jallianwala Bagh and having it do it's maiden voyage to India would have been in much better taste.
Given the fate of the aforementioned Achilles, it would be a sort of pottery.

"but you can still cut your food without the point on your knife, which is an innovative way to look at it."
You can cut your food without the point on your knife... if someone has prepped it for you. But that person is going to find it pretty difficult to carve a chicken or chop tomatoes or prep avocados without a knife point. I guess Idris doesn't cook for himself.

Idris Elba on stabbing crisis: 'Not all kitchen knives need a point on them'
Do these fools not know the best way to knoife someone is with a slash? Unless you know what you're doing if you're stabbing with a pierce you're doing it wrong, gotta spill the guts with sideways angle. At least they've finally moved on and officially clocked on to most "offensive weapons" being nabbed out of mum's kitchen cabinet and not some zombie machete imported from murderland. Complete boondoggle as always.

I've voted this optimistic because nothing good happens in British politics. We won't get our trump who had loads of policies ready to sign/go on day one. Labour are still surprised they got voted in and need to ask companies what the fuck to do. Thank god we've got a customer service pro in Rachael

I don't understand this whole grift. No one has been lied to , no one has had any info hidden from them with regards to their bit of the transaction. I don't go in to local shop and see the breakdown of how/where each layer of the logistics pie makes its profit so why is this any different?
which thick cunts don't know that car dealerships make money from finance companies?

EDIT: hit post not save. crap
EDIT 2: Jack Baruth had a great article about how/where car dealerships make their money. looking for it now.

He signed the hire purchase agreement without reading it - in his words because it was "an enormous amount of paperwork" and he trusted a used car salesmen to tell him everything. The car financing only covered the cost of the car and not the commission payment, so he also entered into a personal loan agreement to cover that expense (which was bundled together in the paperwork). From the court documents -
Had he read the agreement or even given it little more than a cursory glance it would have been obvious to him that he was paying £1,595.31 more than the cash price for the car of £4,803.69. In effect, he was paying a third more for the car than it was worth. He must have accepted this, because he signed the “contract of sale” and the hire purchase agreement.
He was paying this off for a while until he discovered from a Facebook post he should check what he was paying, and that's when he got up in arms because he discovered that he was paying cost of car + commission payment.
There's a bit more to the case to do with brokerage and having a deal with first refusal with a financier instead of trying to find the best deal for the client, but in effect the used car salesman was a bit predatory (who would have thought) by not spelling out the entire value of what he'd be paying off, and he's an idiot for not reading the contracts he was signing.

It'll likely be Tories back in when Labour are out so good as debatable.

Based off the prior ruling focusing on dates prior to 2021, seemingly supported by what the poster above me said, the setup was already looked at and agreed to be deceptively worded. I understand the situation as the dealers being considered to have hidden that, as well as commission on the car, they were also offered additional commission to sign people up to specific finance schemes that included in the price of the finance the sales people's bonuses for signing them onto that. While people accept that a salesperson is going to screw you on the products they sell where you are it was somewhat vague that they were also screwing people on the loans by making them include their bonuses in what you are paying off.

What about all the legislation where weebs were getting arrested for buying katanas? Not allowed to carry knives or else 3 years? Arrested for importing a CS knife?

Nope, the answer is we need to outlaw sharp objects, all food must be pre-prepared by a knife license holder from your local super goymarket.

I just want freedom man, I want to be able to carry a gun to defend myself from someone that wants to kill me. Hell, can we at least have pepper spray? The European justification for restricting these rights is purely out of power. There is no logical reason when it's clear fake asylum seekers have guns and knives illegally.
