plus the logical extension of a spear, pikes , were sometimes 20 feet long. They were absolutely VITAL in military operations, back before guns and such, they were essentially just "range, but MORE". you could effectively nullify a cavalry rush since they would impale themselves on them, and no foot soldier would want to fight what was BASICALLY a giant porcupine with quils trying to gouge their eyes out.

So spears ARE a damn good weapon, just not the ones the bush hunters of Africa used. And even some of the higher tiers of weapons like halberds, billhooks, pole axes, pole hammers, sword staffs, ect, are kinda just "spear, 2, spear harder"
