Right now, it feels like he's treating America like it's a giant game of Sims, and he's hitting that point where he was getting bored with the day to day gameplay so he's decided to go balls to the wall on the save file and start doing extreme stuff to make the world interesting. At the end of the day, given his wealth status, he's largely disconnected from anything that happens. Just like in a Sims game, if you meddle around too much and mess up the world, you aren't personally affected. You just quit and start a new file.

I don't think he's going to destroy the government or anything quite so drastic, and at the end of the day, I don't even think he's going to really change much. Like others have said, he has a pattern of doing stuff like this. Tearing it down, then ultimately reverting (mostly) back to the older system when the new one fails. Just a slightly worse version of it. I think that's more or less what's going to happen here. He's going to make a big deal about defunding things he doesn't understand, there's going to be an initial panic for a week or two, then the halted funds will resume, but everyone will be paranoid and worried, some people won't come back and they'll be replaced with newer, less qualified people who ultimately can still do the job, but in a slower and less efficient manner.

Did you miss the part where I mentioned that the population of the USA grew by about 75% between then and now? When you have more laws/regulations and more people to violate those laws/regulations you need more bureaucrats to run the government. The fact that there is labor saving technology is how this has happened without growing the number of people working for the federal government. I also was pretty clear that there are certainly some useless bureaucrats, they exist in the private sector as well. But even if you fired 100% of US federal workers and were able to run the government with Grok at 0% efficiency loss that's 15.5% of the total deficit addressed.

But we don't live in that reality so what will happen is we'll lose institutional knowledge. The laws are all still there so they don't get the option to just skip getting a permit for a permitted activity or stop following a regulation, unless they bank on the government also not being competent enough to enforce the law anymore. The rule of law is weakened and market uncertainty increases as companies struggle to understand the tradeoffs posed by compliance costs vs penalties for noncompliance.

"Move fast and break things" is a terrible philosophy to apply to a national government and is also contrary to how our constitutional government was designed in the first place.
