Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

So I get this is probably an ignorant question in this thread, but is TNO actually worth playing? I know nothing about the drama side of it but the setting seems fun.

I've just heard that they've taken a bunch of content out? And that it's basically a visual novel instead of a strategy game.
You're better off not wasting 8-12 hours on a fake economics and event slideshow

If you want gameplay and narrative play TFR

Not really, if you want to know how the modern TNO experience looks like, just read my Mexico AARs. You are bombarded with events and useless minigames. TFR is better for a modern day mod, and Red Dusk is also pretty good for a vanilla-like experience

Yes, play my version. It'll cure your undiagnosed melanoma.

Even peak TNO isn't worth playing. Some of the storylines are enjoyable but there isn't a lot of real fun mappies gameplay to be had.

Yunnan and the Russian warlords are the good parts of it but otherwise no. And you can always play the original TNO here.

;Edit it look like George Droyd is back.

Anything good about TNO was taken away long ago. It's a bunch of shitty minigames with the occasional proxy war where you send like 3 divisions to some African country that'll join the other side because you forgot to play one of the 5 minigames that's going on concurrently with one another during your playthrough.

Don't get you hopes up for the major players getting any useful content either because the TrooNO devs are too busy with their fifteenth gay fanfic story plotline and some skeleton content for some nation in the middle of no where that somehow took 5 years irl to implement.

I never played MD since I don't hate myself. What is in it that is anti-Trump and other funny politics inside of it?
I haven't touched it in months but I remember way back during the 1st Trump admin they added 5 octillion world news events that took place practically every week about whatever Trump said that date. Also at that time I distinctly remember the U.K had a fascist path but the last time I checked a year ago it was removed

tl;dr play russia
edit: 2WRW just got updated today, 500 megabyte patch. i assume its BotI, not sure how much it's gonna screw up the tyumen mod but whatever. they haven't provided a list of changes on the steampage or the TNO reddit and i'm not in their discord, can someone check it for me?
edit 2: nevermind, just them copy pasting the pre-deepfreeze content over and updating it to 1.15. they haven't even integrated any of the new content like india and new zealand as so on.

I would say give it a try. TNO gets (rightfully) dogpiled on here but it has (or had) potential and has a unique playstyle compared to other hoi4 mods. The visual novel/choose your own adventure style of gameplay was not meant for the Hoi4 engine so it’s a unique experience from a technical angle.

For the definitive experience play two campaigns, one superpower (I recommend Speer’s Germany) and one Russian warlord (whichever you want). Stay away from mid tier powers as they’re both incredibly boring and unfulfilling. Check out Toji’s Mexico AAR on here for details.

Curious. I haven't formally uploaded the mod to steam yet. Wanted to at least finish heydrich first and fix some bugs at least, as well as add some generic russia expansion content.

In any case, I have a message to all hoi4 dev lurkers. Join Me. I will pay you janny wages. You will never be freer.

@GoodWinSon Are going to continue to update TNO? If so, got any fun plans for any countries down the pipeline?
I have a broad outline for another 10 years of content. My focus will be on the established major nations, US, Germany, and Japan, as well as the current emerging powers in the game, Russia and China. I call it the 10 Year Major Content Plan.

Domestic Politics

Germany

-Post nuclear struggle Heydrich. This is what I am working on now. I intend for it to last 10 years and I have 5 years of focuses coded so far.

-G4 Speer, Greater German republic. ~10 years. A republic with a dominant executive and a legislature ran by unstable coalitions. Also you can try to form the KN.

-Reform Speer. Status-quo for Speer. Can also try to form KN.

-Conservative-coup speer. Nation dominated by the NSDAP rather than the fuhrer. Sort of a mix between bormann and speer. Can’t form the KN

-Bormann. Pick a sucessor before you bite it. Preserve the Reich from enemies within and without.

-Goering. Goering is probably the weirdest successor. In anycase, if you win as him you get a global civil war with some content. Might add a Speidel counter coup for Schoerners coup (during war plan A) as a way to have a more moderate foreign policy path. Also finally adding Speidel will be a nice touch.

USA

Content for 1972 presidents, new 1976 presidents, and 1980 presidents. Haven’t decided on their political paths but I have a few outlines.

-Gus Hall (NPP-L). Hijack the courts, and rule by decree. Nationalization and heavy industry everywhere. Merge all the intelligence agencies together and go to town. Flavor events where you eat ice cream with Castro. I think if you succeed as him and don’t get removed early you should be able to elect a NPP-L sucessor

-Yockey (NPP-Y). Based off of Panzers plans for him. Go super imperialist, dominate your allies, and expand the military massively. Bend the law and institutions to your will and get elected for infinite terms

-Malcolm X (NPP-FR). A meme path I know, might not pull the trigger with him. Wage war on welfare and the hippy degenerates. A strong nation is a happy nation. Uplift black america and secure if for the npp perpetually.

-Nixon (R). Sooty Soot has signaled he wants to code an avoid impeachment path, but I thought Nixon might be a funny path for if you crash out as Yockey or Hall. Nixons image is redeemed and he saves democracy. Again, sort of a meme path.

Japan

-Admittedly I have the least idea on what I want to do with Japan politically aside from continuing the paths already present. I do want to give content to the ultra nat coup though

Russia

-Russia is the easiest and the hardest in a sense. The easiest because the politcal paths are already layed out and the hardest because there are simply so many. Zhukov has three potential successors and he historically dies in 1974. Do want to add the false-Tabs path I talked about a few months ago.

China

-Reform the state and military, the last two modernizations. Secretly make allies within the sphere and without. Soon, it will be time to take the fight to Japan.

Foreign Politics

I have three major wars planned. Each is an opportunity for a major to get massively screwed over

Russia v Germany: The Vengeance War

-Russia/USSR/Eurasia/whatever takes the fight to Germany. War is on a soft timer (think TFR). Outcome depends on how far Russia can push. Good outcomes for Russia are just taking muscowein, muscowein+kaukasia, all the eastern rks minus poland, and taking everything and forming a polish buffer state. Germany’s good outcomes involve either status quo ante bellum or pushing Russia back to the urals and making them your satellite, (this essentially knocks Russia out of the game).

China vs Japan

-China and its allies fight for freedom against Japan. Some nations are always allied to China (India), others to Japan (Manchuko, Azad Hind), and some depends on actions of China and Japan, Indonesia depends on who won their civil war with Free Indonesia joining China and normal Indonesia joining Japan.

-America hops in as well and starts another war in the Pacific.

-Outcomes range from Japan permanently putting down China and utterly devastating them, to Japan losing all their colonies and allies and getting knocked out of their position as a great power.

South America War

-I haven’t fully fleshed this out, but it will be a war in America’s backyard with Germany and Japan supporting nations friendly to them.

-Victory for anti-Americans damages and debuffs America severely while victory for pro-Americans boosts the US

Assorted Events

-Russia will get options to expand in central asia, and also can fight a war to reclaim the far east. In this war they can also steal parts of mongolia and manchuria from Japan. I don’t know if this will specifically happen during the Sino-Japanese war, or whenever.

-Regardless, I think then afterwards Russia and China can skirmish over the lands assuming China wins independence.

-Russia then gets more expansion options after their war with germany. They get more depending on how well they do. Example, if you want to war with Turkey over west Gerogia and Armenia you have to have won Kaukasia first.

-Germany and Italy scuffle over the Balkans. Right I’m only planning this for Heydrich/Europa, since the great game minigame never triggers there but I might add it to other paths as well. Essentially, Heydrich backs Hungary against Romania which triggers an all out war in the balkans with Italy and Germany sending proxies to their sides.

-Since none of the balkan nations actually have content this is easy to do, but I think this can be kept even if/when the balkan tags get content.

Great Power Rating and Detentes

-The rating I plan to code in before I officially release the mod on steam

-Each great power gets a rating based on GDP vs debt, number of factories, number of allies/puppets, military size, nuclear stockpile size, and prestige. Great powers are then ranked based on their rating.

-The top 3 powers get varying bonuses with the number 1 power getting the biggest bonus. Rankings are updated every month

-Prestige works like it does in Vic2 and is very important for maintaining your rank. It can be gained/lost through a variety of means but the most important is wars/proxy wars.

-Using the SA war as an example, Total victory for US nets them a good amount of prestige and causes Germany to lost a good amount. Biased cease fires less so, and status quo does nothing to prestige.

-Actual wars net the most amount of prestige. Russia pushing all the way to Poland/east Germany nets them a giant amount of prestige, while Germany loses a catastrophic amount

-Originally there are only three great powers in-game, USA, JAP, and GER but they are joined by Italy after they get nukes, Russia if they gain territory against Germany, and China if they win independence.

-You can also lose great power status, but right now I only have Japan doing that.

-Maybe Thatcherite Britain and France can be added as great powers later but that’s not finalized.

-Detentes can be formed through a variety of ways. One planned way is forming the KN which adds Detentes between the three original powers

-Detentes are represented by ideas that give good buffs

-Overt hostile action, like a war or sending volunteers to a hostile proxy will break a detente

-Breaking a detente costs prestige

-Covert or indirect action doesn’t break a detente but I might add a mechanic where there’s a chance to each time you take a covert hostile action

Burgundy

-Once all the majors have been sufficiently fleshed out, I’ll move onto Burgundy

-Burgundy will get 1 ubergloabalplan which involves causing as much chaos as possible.

-Burgundy can buff/debuff any nation it wants in a war, can cause warcrimes to escalate wars, and generally cause as much suffering as possible

-Causing more chaos buffs you

-Burgundy benefits the most from stalemates so their goal is to cause as many as possible.

Content Outside This Outline

-After fleshing out the major players I want to expand and give content to other tags as well.

-Italy I want to give more direct control over what goes on in the Med and around it. Heck, maybe I’ll give them an option to restore the Roman Empire

-The frances, especially “free” france. Want to give them a confrontation against Brittany and finally Burgundy. I’m putting Gaddafi in free france and you can’t stop me.

-The Rks. Have some fun idea for Kaukasia, they deserve content after all these years.

-Balkans. Croatia should be able to break off if they hold off italy long enough. Tito should get peaceful unification with Serbia if they go commie.

-Content for Kazakh tags? Nowa Polska is too good a meme to pass up.

-Actually giving state cultures some importance. Maybe if your culture is wrong then the state gets a debuff.

-Rework Africa devestation into a Huttig genocidal war against african warlords

-Giving Turkey content and giving Iberia content for 1972 onwards

-India and Azad Hind contend. Maybe Afghanistan while I’m at it?

-I vaguely remember Australia was planned to have some content where they break off from the OFN, might want to give that a look

Anyway if you have a suggestion, I’d appreciate it. Especially with content I’m less concrete on.

Great Ideas Goodwin.
The South Americans war can be,Peru vs Ecuador,Argentina trying to restore the Viceroyalty borders,Paraguay Reenacting the Triple Alince war,Colombian Civil War,Brazil intervention in Guyana, etc.
And more Flavor events and things to do while you wait with focuses or decisions, like mre states having the Russian Warlord development mechanic, those are my suggestions
PD:I tried Chita and for some reason the Leaders who die and are generals don´t disappear when they die so you could use that bug and make it feature for Taby Russia.

-I haven’t fully fleshed this out, but it will be a war in America’s backyard with Germany and Japan supporting nations friendly to them.
A fascist Colombia will for sure try to go after Panama, as the later was a part of the former just 60 years prior to game start. Maybe if they win they create a chain reaction that plunges the rest of central america into conflict with one another
