Most mere mortals who seek out and find decent professional help tend to be able to navigate adversity with a degree of self-reflection, and humility - traits that Nick abandoned long ago. (That's assuming that his modest "I'm your host, Nick Rekieta of Rekieta Law, a small law firm in central Minnesota" was ever genuine to begin with.)

That's ignoring those pesky 12 Steps that help so many people. I recently scrolled through them with Nick in mind. These jumped out:

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

As this chapter of The Nick Rekieta Saga comes to a close I've been most amused by this point made by both Meme Copium and Sean: The government saved Nick and his family, however imperfectly and temporarily.
