Contra was scared off celebrity collabs after having Buck Angel on (briefly, for a line read, in one video) caused half of trans twitter to turn on him.

Nick also dislikes collabs or using a film crew because those things hold him accountable to a schedule, whereas if the whole writing, filming, and editing process is on him, it's more work overall, but Nick also gets to do it at whatever pace and hours he prefers. He'll tell himself it's about maintaining creative control and video quality, but what makes it to the screen tells me he's spending the last month or so of the production process over-editing and getting wonky with the sound design.

I'm just going to post it here verbatim.

I was an early viewer of the channel and noticed that Nick was doing a lot on zero budget, and considering he was 100% self-taught I was impressed. (He's competitive to YTers who actually have film school degrees, as evidenced by his status in the BreadTube crowd, nearly all of whom went to film school expect Contra.)

I felt he could achieve a lot more if someone handed him a better camera, props and some advice, so I did. That got us to talking. We enjoyed talking about Dworkin and other feminist stuff and some philosophy subjects. We'd hang out on video calls, I remember watching Hillary Clinton lose while chilling w him on video call and both of us in disbelief. We met up in person in New York a couple of times (usually him bundling a trip so he could see some other friends in the area too.) The friendship soured around the time he changed his name, I was just another face in the crowd by then, and I've had little to do with him since.

When someone uses a platform like Squarespace, they usually pay for a subscription that covers hosting and other features. If they stop paying the fees (either for the subscription or the domain), Squarespace will typically replace the site with a placeholder page. Yes, it means he's not paid his hosting or domain reg bill. Most likely, he doesn't care, so long as his Patreon is up he's Gucci. Chalk that up to depression, the fear of a following that could hold him to account, content paralysis (i.e. nothing to say) or even just laziness.

I do think the public scrutiny of being popular is somewhat of a deterrent. Nick would like his videos to be famous, but he wants himself personally to not be famous; or rather, he wants fame but only on his terms. It bugs him that being famous means to a certain extent your time stops being your own. He wants to have his cake (of being famous and successful) and to eat it too (never face public scrutiny or be held accountable by fans.)

Every time I asked him directly he wouldn't say. He'd get all super cagey like he was worried *I* was gonna try to steal from him. (Far from it.) IMO he gets some thousands of dollars more than he needs month to month, even with the long dormancies on his channel notwithstanding, some fans seem content to hand Nick money to do nothing. (Which, as his de-facto costumer for quite some time, I suppose I should not judge... but I at least got to see him use the costumes and props.)

Lindsay Ellis, yes, definitely, Hbomberguy, also, probably Dan Olson is influenced by Contra on some level. (PhilosophyTube, well, I don't need to tell you the influence there. It's quite obvious.) I used to keep track of when Contra would make a really specific production choice, like that gel contrast-lighting that's became a hallmark of his, or hanging traditional wallpaper on the soundstage to decorate it, and then wait to see how long it would take for the other BreadTube people to start aping it. There was a point when it seemed like all these film school nerds were taking notes from Nick.

It was something that he hadn't read until I recommended it. Nick had heard of the bad press about Dworkin but never actually read her writings or about her history. I persuaded Nick to give her a go (and I even sent him a couple of her books on paperback) because I felt Dworkin's feelings about the proscriptiveness of traditional gender roles were a close match to his own, as in, I noticed he felt as burdened by maleness and wanting to flout those expectations as Dworkin felt burdened by the expectations of femaleness and flouted those. She's worth reading, despite the 1980's vintage right-wing backlash memery.

I did read Intercourse and Pornography and a few others. I felt she was right that much if not all of heterosexual sex, especially in the late 80's and early 90's, has very rapey undertones. Men certainly had an expectation then that if they got pissed off enough it was cool to beat their GFs, which actually happened to Dworkin. She comes by her anger at men very honestly.

It's art in the sense that Nick genuinely meant what he said and that his distress is made comprehensible to anyone who watches it, even if they never had gender dysphoria, like me. If art is aesthetically pleasing, and/or it makes you feel something, it is effective. To whatever extent Gender Dysphoria helped me relate to Nick's gender distress it is effective art. Also Lindsay wanted to put it in competitions for short film awards and Nick would not let that happen. He's often the roadblock to his own ascendancy like that.

I felt something when he was willing to get super honest and blink back tears and weep in front of the camera over his gender dysphoria, back in 2017 when I was willing to hear this sort of thing out. In the film world you call that "show don't tell", which makes it a damn sight better than some later videos of his which are all "tell don't show".

It ain't even just that. If it was Nick feeling guilty about sex that would be easy. Nick is just uncertain about his own ontology of pleasure. With the exception of classical music and maybe makeup and objective beauty, he's afraid that the things which make him happy should not make him happy because they are crass or base. Calling him crass or base is like the power charm to reduce Nick back down to his lowest state.
