Marvel Cinematic Universe

New Spiderman episodes (surprisingly three at once)

+ Setup for Rhino, Scorpion, and Doc Ock are actually pretty decent
+ Hell Doc Ock being a proactive villain is refreshing with reasonable motives
+ Side cast is alright still

= Norman feels like they're leaning into the Iron Patriot stuff than the Goblin idea, based on his stated goals which could be interesting since I don't think they ever adapted that side of Norman before.

- Peter is pretty much Tom Holland Spiderman still even with everyone knowing his secret identity because now both the Osborns know who he is, and he's not really interesting. Like the only stuff he seems to struggle with are scheduling and I guess the financial stuff but he has a cushy internship so there really isn't much. It's kind of hard to see what sort of arc they're going for beyond the generic "be a top hero" since there isn't much else to him.
- Half of Episode 4 was spent on a subplot of Peter trying on shitty Spider-Man costumes Norman gives him (imagine that cape scene from Incredibles except a third of the episode), hell Peter and Norman's dynamic feels like it would fit in The Boys with a superhero getting advice from their agent on demographics and such.
- Tombstone's sort of turn to loving crime feels way too fast, beats up Scorpion (when he's just a gangbanger) and gets love from criminals who forced him into this lifestyle (despite already being a well respected quarterback) to suddenly embrace a criminal lifestyle (mind you he joined a gang just to switch places with his little bro). It just feels so rushed.
- A lot of MCU plot points that remind you this was meant to tie into the MCU with the Civil War stuff being mentioned except Spider-Man isn't part of it.
I understand why normal criminals aren't in costume, but why do none of the super villains in this show look anything more than 'Generic person with a piece of tech on one of their limbs'? Hell, I don't think the speedster and energy blade women (are they meant to be some of the enforcers?) get named in the episode.

And who is going to the gang war without bringing a gun?

For everyone speculating on why Pedro Pascal keeps getting roles:
Latinos with these background aren't as rare as you could think. Pedro didn't just come up one day and started to have a lot of roles because his mom made some calls . He had several small roles before: Buffy, two L&O, the Mentalist. It was GoT what put him in the spotlight bc the role was good and he played it perfectly. He's not a bad actor, he's just a shitty human.

Pascal get roles bc he's a "safe" Latino. He's white, but swarthy enough (he's a med) to pass as a "brown" man as he was born in S. America. Hollywood prefers those kind of Spaniards rather than the more Celtic looking type. Like, look at the Emilia Pérez actor. He was a blonde man. Even Sofía Vergara had to dye her hair from her natural blonde to pass as Latina.

He also happens to have the right opinions.

Even worse is that Disney haves the Marvel comics archives with the 1960ies issues. Coupled with Disney own archives of the stuff they made in the 1960ies. And both Marvel and Disney have much older works that speculated on how sci-fi futuristic the 1960ies might've been. If they tossed any of that into the AI, at least there would been the barest of threads linking the movie to the comics.

He's white, but swarthy enough
only when he's got the mustache, without it he looks like your average slightly pudgy white dude, like he looks like he could play middle aged Josh Moon.

also a bit sad Sofia didn't use modern family being a huge hit to dye her hair back to blond (can you even be a non-dyed blonde in your 30s? i thought the hair naturally darkens/grays by then)

thats actually a great point, the problem is that would cost money, i am surprised movies don't use AI to basically make Matte painting instantaneous, just have someone crank out a bunch of stuff that looks 90% there, hire other people and go "the producer got his nephew to make this and it looks like fucking shit, we need you to remake this and remove all the fuck ups" so the usual AI mistakes are buffed out and boom! the same effect in a lot less time.

Like when you look up how they made older scifi films, i know for a fact AI could do at least a student film knock off level of quality of that stuff then just fill it in.

Plus that would be the only economically viable way to do it, Brad Bird felt the way you did when he got the job to make tomorrowland only to remember how much it all cost and basically got forced into much cheaper "robots that look exactly like humans" and spending only a handful of minutes in "the city of the future"

the costs just to reproduce that stuff is way too much plus its fucking marvel and from the beginning it has been fast and loose with the whole "quality" aspect of the films. its why people are rarely in costume and they're usually standing alone in green screen.

It’s so funny to me that the “Kamala Khan” character is known more from the Oneyplays episodes where they make fun of what a badly written unappealing character she is than the movies she’s been in. I’d bet money that more people have watched their playthrough than saw The Marvels; certainly more have enjoyed it.

If she’s anything like she is in that game and the other DEI replacements are like her, then I can see why they were so desperate to get RDJ back and eager to gargle his iron nuts with that bonkers compensation package. Kamala Khan don’t pay the bills.

Is anyone excited for the MCU now? this year's slate of films reminds me of the last couple seasons of HIMYM or Modern family or any other show on its last couple seasons, everything is toned down and the trailers all feel like everyone's going through the motions. Thunderbolts looks like shit, even reddit isn't really excited. Cap American 4 blows, FF feels like it will suck too, and this isn't just the opinions of cool guys with hot girlfriends like me, but normies and redditors and teenagers as well.

i bet if they let the Oneyplay guys write the marvels it would have been a lot better, i bet the actress they'd cast would've looked like this

Nah, the MCU version of Kamala is a lot better. Most of that is down to the actress, to be fair.

But I am skeptical.
if it was all a gimmick whomever thought that up deserves a lot of promotions its perfect. the problem is her letterboxd account showing her shittalking movies and actresses from the MCU is sort of a shitty thing to do and not something i'd expect a studio to sign off of, especially the mouse, double for an extremely new actress. if it was ryan reynolds or someone more established sure, but she is a nobody and for marketers to do all this work for a total nobody is slightly insane.

beyond that, her career is fucking gone. the marvels flopped and she has no career outside of her character she's back to being a nobody, maybe working the con circuit but she's no one.

the time and money to put it all on a fresh teenager in the modern political climate is way too risky and i bet we'd have heard from some vile jew if it was a marketing scheme now. i suspect with how bad of a reputation hit people in hollywood got post oct 7th they aren't willing to hire a chubby muslim bitch either.

I deleted my earlier message, but I'll repeat myself so people know what you're replying about.

I was talking about how it was way too coincidental how Iman Vellani, the actress, has so much in common with Kamala Khan. It's way too perfect to be true. Maybe I can buy the casting agents finding a Pakistani actress with a Muslim background for the role. But her also being a comic book fan girl who corrected Feige on the universe designation of the comics being the real 616? (This is something only comic fans care about. A Hollywood actress? Fat chance.) And also being a comic nerd, and acting exactly like comic Kamala Khan, including critiquing the movies, being invested in the MCU continuity, and shit-talking movies and actresses is just too perfect not to be skeptical it was a marketing ploy.

I deleted my previous message because it's not a hill I'd die on. But if she really is the real deal, then I do feel bad for her, because having an actor who is a real fan, and not just in it for a big paycheck, is rare. But Kamala Khan has failed every single attempt to rescue her from being a C-lister. And trust me Marvel has thrown a lot of money at Kamala Khan trying to make her a thing. Maybe the MCU in its prime could've saved her. But with the current "woke" MCU? She was doomed from the start, even. if Iman did her best.

Oh Yelena and Bucky and Alexei and fucking Val, I've missed you so. You and Daredevil are the only MCU properties worth it.

Fuck it, I'll say it: I'm game. I need my damn Black Widow closure. So I need Yelena beating the shit out of Val. The asterisk definitely is going to be a big plot reveal. Hopefully its better than Captain Coonerica: Hulk Solo Edition (Woke 2.0)

I'm not familiar with Bill Pullman beyond Spaceballs. Is his son a good actor?

Maaan I miss Avengers Endgame and the buildup to that.

Sure many of the movies were bland, but the build up was awesome. Was a "must've been there to experience" kinda thing; can't get that by watching them now...
I miss the buildup to the original Avengers. That was a real had-to-be-there moment. There was barely any precedent and thus barely any expectation, it was just awesome that they were doing it at all, and the fact that it turned out to be a fun watch was icing on the cake. I was fucking stoked to see it. There was nothing to fuck up yet, they hadn't even really started fucking up the comics at that point, there was nothing to dread.

I don't want to take anything away from you but you're insane. I think we had a discussion in this thread a million years ago about Marvel's compulsion to undercut every dramatic, emotional or otherwise compelling scene with a shitty Joss Whedon quip, and this trailer makes this movie look like the most egregious offender of that to date besides Deadpool. The only thing that makes me want to watch this is the prospect of The Sentry/The Void giving me some catharsis by painting the pavement with the rest of the unfunny, unlikeable cast, since this looks to be Marvel's answer to The Boys/Invincible as well as Suicide Squad. I want to love Bucky but he hasn't been allowed to be a character since Civil War, just let him die already.

Its a sequel to a Disney+ series directed by a tv director and written by two tv writers. BEEF must have been some amazing series for Disney to poach the director and two writers to make a big budget tentpole film.

I want to like it, but I know its going to suck.

Here's a clip from their previous work:

I'm not because it's a corpse now. It died with Endgame and they refuse to accept it.

It's really not as rare as people think. Evanna Lynch was a hard HP fan who took the chance of playing Luna when the open casting was announced and she looks exactly the part. A. J. Locascio and Channing Tatum both were fans of Gambit in their childhood and both took also the chance to play him. Mackie, Hoult, and McAvoy were also xmen fans.
