It's easy to be kind of cynical about the minerals thing because it turns what's an easy moral decision to most of us in this thread into something with an unnecessary transactional element, but if you think about it a bit it's not entirely one-sided exploitation. American firms which take advantage of the deal to set up or improve mining operations in a post-war Ukraine are going to be creating a decent number of jobs for locals, helping stabilize the post-war economy and giving veterans returning from the front something to do besides get drunk and remember what they've seen too much. Sure, it would be better if domestic companies set up these operations instead and kept more of the profits of the resources in Ukraine, but I presume not many Uke corporations have the capability to do that sort of thing or they'd be doing it already. So at least for the short to medium term, the mineral deal can be seen as a pledge for foreign economic investment.

Is that an unwarrantedly optimistic take?
