It seems weird, because one hallmark of Stephanie's--and quite a few other cows'--upbringing is that she gets whatever she wants.
AmeriCorps isn't Job Corps, the one you join when you have no skills or prospects, your stepdad's a jerk and you don't want to join the Army. AmeriCorps is volunteering--with a living allowance and with a voucher to pay/pay back tuition at the end. AmeriCorps does have housing rolled into its sub-group National Civilian Conservation Corps, but otherwise it's off of the person's (greater) stipend.
Was this Stephanie's family's one attempt to make her "pay for" her schooling? Did she have no extracurriculars and someone suggested a year of volunteering to make her look better for her MSW program?

Well, she does use Discord from what we know. I think her problem is that the successful Discord groomers usually have to lure kids into their own server, and Stapphy's attempt at a ghostfucker server was with Snowy. I doubt she has the drive to make another one of her own AND the ability to actually attract any kids into it.

That's how it works in the world of reality: often the GM is the person in the group who's least-employed. You pay them, indirectly via taxes, to think about elves and maps off and on all week and run the game on Saturday.
I'm not saying she'd be a good GM, but water finds its own level. Stephanie could definitely get a bunch of people to worldbuild with her and listen to her thoughts about how magic works.

Dude, I feel you. Extreme vetting and not getting involved in a long campaign until you know the people well, then gritting your teeth of buckling in for the emotional labor that is a woman's eternal lot in life if she wants to kill some god-damned kobolds with autists, because yes you shouldn't have to be the adult but someone needs to keep lines of communication open and expectations of behavior clear. I haven't had a regular group in a couple of years because PEOPLE keep having BABIES but trust me I know what I'll be stepping back into.
However, that's my point: those transgender tiefling players are exactly Stephanie's people.
I've always thought that it's weird that Stephanie isn't big into fandom--Loki is obviously Marvel Loki but he's mostly her own personal version using British Actor #12 as a jumping-off point.
I wonder if it's because she's such a bad student. She doesn't like engaging with true crime fandom as much as she likes referencing it to outsiders. When you're talking to other people in the same fandom you have to allow give and take, and you have to be ready for correction if there's a fact-based thing you missed (even tumblr-level correction) and you have to realize you're not going to become the immediate head boss of a fandom you just found last week, especially if you can't draw or write. You're also not going to be a trusted reference if the fan-run wiki can catch you out on not knowing your shit; look at how much of her rare herbal advice is to other people and is the very first thing you'd think of if you, as an unstudied but nerdy person, thought about that herb. And look at her Amazon wishlist and how she has dozens of "beginner's guide" books wanted for the same subjects, nothing deeper.
But a TTRPG group is tailor-made for her: it starts with the turnkey game world that's ready to go off the shelf, and from then on in it's nothing but house ruling and hilarious injokes and stories you had to be there for. She'd be telling people on her socials about all the queer and anarchic things her friends said/did and forgetting to mention that she's talking about what the player characters did in a game.
Also she could run one-shots with pre-gen characters for her pals at the Senior Center if she wanted to get some publicity photos.

I think you answered your own question; you need friends to play these games on any sort of long time scale and have fun in-joke shenanigans with.
Stapphy doesn't have any friends, and is such a tone-deaf, repellen, oblivious person that she reliably alienates anyone who interacts with her longer than a month or two, even in her groups with shared interests where people are expected to be total freakshows (serial killer fandom, looking at you). I seriously don't think she could manage it, and she couldn't DM because even as rare and valued as DMs are it would mean it was something that wasn't ALL ABOUT HER.
How fucking ignorant and naïve to presume that gay or transgender couples don't argue. Gay and trans couples can also argue and stay together, like any other couple. In her narrow POV it's only the cishet ones that do. She also presumes that her neighbours are cishet. They could be trans or non binary, or bisexual, for all she knows.
