I don't know about ginger ale specifically but for orange soda the brominated vegetable oil is there to make sure the orange flavoring doesn't come out of solution and just end up floating on top, I presume it's something like that. There's gotta be alternatives though, unless orange soda/ginger ale just don't exist in the rest of the world since BVO is banned in a lot of places

For ginger ale, there's an excellent alternative: make it yourself. It's easy to do, it tastes wonderful, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper/healthier than the store-bought stuff.
