The fasces is a core component of American iconography:

The people who designed that monument were not thinking in terms of Lincoln being a good politician who had some great ideas and manages the beaurocracy and military well. They thought of him as a conquering Emperor and that is what they depicted him as.

The fasces doesn't signify a conquering emperor. It signifies the strength of many bound together as one. It's especially appropriate on the Lincoln memorial because a core belief of the Union side as expressed by Lincoln was that America's strength came from the union formed by the 1783 Constitution, and a loose confederation of independent states would be easy pickings for the hungry empires of Europe.

The fasces fell out of favor after 1945 for obvious reasons, although the Germans didn't care for it, so we didn't tear it down at least.

RFK and Trump knows he's there for the health and not the other stuff. They're both not total ideologues and know what is important and how to compromise. I think RFK cares the most about health and chronic disease, the other stuff is secondary and he won't have control over that.

To me, this speaks more to RFK and Trump's character more than anything else. Something this high profile within partisan politics is unheard of in my lifetime, at least I don't recall anything this big personally. RFK being willing to compromise to get the fucking job done is something beyond the ability of 99.9% of the left. They simply cannot do it.

A couple ice hockey players from the United States and Canada got into a fight with one another right after the game started.

It all happened after a large percentage of the sellout crowd at a center in Canada loudly booed the U.S. anthem. A number of fans also booed every time a U.S. player was shown on video screens during pregame warmups.

There is something poetic about the first shot being fired occurring on a hockey ring.

They have done such a great job of isolating themselves for years that they have no idea how anyone outside their bubble thinks.

Most people can't conceive how bad the isolation and purity spiralling has become. They all bullied each other off of X, and now on Bluesky they're going after people who have Substacks, because Substack is a "Nazi platform." And you can't question anything. Even asking simple clarifying questions is shouted down as "sealioning" or "JAQing off" [Just Asking Questions] or "asking questions in bad faith."

And when you're criticized you're not allowed to defend yourself or play it off as banter the way you might among normal people. The only option is to hang your head and grovel if you want to stay in the group. People see others getting bullied and don't want to lose their friend groups, so they just shut up and never question.

And then there's the IRL isolation. Right after the election I joined a Redditor discord in the hopes of finding some amusing salt (didn't stay long, it was mostly depressing rather than funny). The server had a whole fucking separate channel dedicated solely to "family estrangement," i.e., just telling each other to cut off "fascist" family members, working out the logistics, congratulating each other for doing it. And these weren't groomers aiming to isolate and target kids (groomers might have been present, obviously, but it was mostly an older crowd). It's just a mainstream Reddit/leftist thing now.

Even beyond this, another large chunk is the early Millenial to Boomer gens. Most don’t use the internet past FaceBook and are completely within their own bubble of the 80s-00s as media has been locked in since 08. Weirdly, I think Synthcool, a hardcore lefty, put it best when he talked about the generation that still watches SNL and says it’s funny because they make fun of both sides. These people are completely lost in the modern world as they are stuck in a nonstop loop of Fox Republican news, CNN balanced news, MNSBC Liberal news, Stewart/Colbert/Kimmel/Bee/(insert late night host) is a genius who really points out the flaws of (2000s) Right-wing ideology.

I think we sometimes focus on the internet and woke too much. A good chunk of left wingers are completely isolated from even their own party as they have no idea what woke is and just think it is a dumb Fox News thing. The average X/Boomer doesn’t deal with Woketards and cannot comprehend people’s issues. As for dealing with Republicans, they are dealing with other Boomers who are equally clueless, just adding more fuel to the ego to epically own them with Late Night talking points.

You misunderstood. I did actually mean the Fasces being on Lincolns throne in the traditional sense. Not calling Lincoln a Nazi. Calling him definitionally an Emperor. Out of the Many...One. Which is what the Fasces represents.

Also, I seem to recall that the last time a congressman gave another congressman a well deserved beating, the guy ended up in a hospital for weeks, and it led to a civil war.
