The United States announced substantial additional assistance for Moldova at the Moldova Partnership Platform ministerial conference in Chisinau September 17. USAID Assistant Administrator Erin McKee, head of the U.S. delegation, said, “The United States remains deeply committed to our more than 30-year partnership with Moldova and looks forward to continuing our cooperation to build a democratic, prosperous, and secure future for all Moldovans.”
The additional assistance includes $38 million to improve energy security, boost trade, support independent media, and bolster local public administration. The United States will also provide an additional $4 million through USAID to further expand Moldova’s fruit exports and increase support for Moldova’s small and medium-sized enterprises.
The United States, through the Department of State and USAID, also announced the intention to work with the U.S. Congress to allocate an additional $75 million in development assistance to strengthen Moldova’s vital transportation and logistics infrastructure and to enhance Moldova’s cybersecurity capabilities.
This new funding will bring the total U.S. assistance to Moldova to $949 million since February 2022. The United States has provided more than $2.6 billion in assistance to Moldova since its independence.
Assistant Administrator McKee also met with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminița Odobescu to discuss U.S.-Romanian collaboration to further advance Moldova’s energy security. The United States, through USAID, is partnering with Romania’s Ministry of Energy to increase Moldova’s access to the European electricity market, by committing to jointly support Transelectrica and Moldelectrica to design and construct the Gutinaș-Strășeni transmission line, a new 400 kV interconnector.
The United States and Romania are committed to ensure that the Republic of Moldova becomes energy independent and reduces its reliance on Russian energy sources. As discussed today at the Moldova Partnership Platform, this is another example of allies working together by pooling expertise and resources to support Moldova’s future.
