Civvie 11 - Retro FPS Boomer

Well, its been a very long while since he made a movie review and his postal videos implied one point he quit making them because playing with the youtube copyright system was just too much for him.
He says it himself that he's willing to risk playing with the YouTube copyright system for this one because it was just that terrible.

Quake IIII when, Civvie?
Hasn't he done a video on Quake 4 already?

I've always hated the console shooters and how they've led to everything getting dumbed down. Fuck Goldeneye, fuck Perfect Dark and fuck Timesplitters.
TimeSplitters fucking rocks cock, you're gay

I replayed Red Faction not long ago, and it's rather mid, and that is a generous assessment.
The second half of the campaign is clearly rushed with copy-paste level design, hit-scan, wall-hack, one-shot enemies and a secondary villain introduced out of nowhere.
Most weapon are either shit or are overpowered, there is zero enemy variety, and the geo-engine gimmick gets dropped 1/3 into the game.

Red Faction was actually really cool when I was a kid.
The Children Yearn For The Mines.

Turns out he left twitter for bluesky too lmao
Finally got around to this video like a month later

Very good, very entertaining overall despite me disagreeing that HL1 is better than HL2

- Nbomberguy being in the intro for literally no reason bothers me. It says a lot that Civvie was enough of a fan of that fag to include him in a non sequitur cameo that doesn't come up again

- Half Life 1 sucks. It's impressive for the time, but the combat is bad, a lot of it is trying to find which room has the right button in it to press to unblock your path, they start relentlessly spamming you with enemies around half way through, there isn't enough of a narrative to carry it, and even the fans admit half the game is hot dogshit

- Half Life 2 aged way better than Half Life 1

- I agree with a lot of his points, to the point where I thought something and then he'd say it almost verbatim a couple times. "Water Hazard. The worst level in the game" and "Antcitizen one. The coolest chapter title in the game" being examples

- I agree that it's weird that everyone sees Gordon Freeman as a Messiah because he was good at killing headcrabs and US marines 20 years ago and then disappeared

- I also agree that everyone acts too gleeful in the game. I'd like to say that most of the cast is bad, especially Eli Vance, his voice actor sounds drunk for the entire game. It reminds me of those old FMV games where everyone would chew the scenery. They are endearing, though and I love Dr. Kleiner and The G Man's performances

- Alyx getting wet at Gordon killing combine is 100% realistic. Look at all the girls creaming over that Luigi guy. It's basically that, but instead of killing a CEO it's traitors who helped an alien species genocide the human race, steal our resources, and force the survivors into a dystopian hellscape

- HEAVILY disagree that naming a character right before death as a way to connect the player to them is stupid. Laszlo's death will always be a great moment. I'm also a huge Odessa Cubbage fan (despite him not dying)

- Breen's kind of a boring villain, but him being convinced that he's helping humanity survive and then trying to potentially screw the combine over to give humanity a bit of a better deal by using Eli as a bargaining chip at the end gives him a bit more depth

- I'd rather have a curated linear experience that tells you where to go than one where you're constantly wandering around in circles. Making fun of Valve for play testing the game and trying to give the characters a break is gay.

- Strider fights are annoying and I hate that you have to fight like 20 back to back

- Water Hazard sucks, but Half Life 1 has like 3 or 4 chapters just as bad, if not worse

- The video overall was well paced, edited well, and well articulated even if I disagree with some major points

Could be rephrased as:
"I don't particularly hate this video even if it feels kind of anemic."

He probably sees it as "more of the same", even if there is a mod for it that does fix some of it's issues.

If he ever does a Witchaven 2 review it will be done spitefully in shorts form, like he did with TNT.
I tried that mod for Witchaven 1 and 2 and there's not that much of a difference. But I found part 2 pretty unappealing even though there were some attempts to fix what was wrong with the first game but it just felt like "more is more = better" kind of design and I just found it to be lesser than the first. Neither game is great but the first game is at least playable and mostly makes sense whereas 2 is more slapdash.

Good to see some love for the 2nd game even though nobody remembers it, it fixes everything wrong with the first one and was perfect when relatives visit you with their minime's to check out this new com-pu-tor thing so you plug the gamepad to the couch, give it to their kid and play the game yourself on the keyboard while the kid goes crazy about the visual orgasms on the monitor. Too bad he didn't touch the GBA version which was like the first game, but upped the annoyance to the max.

Didn't mind the video, perfectly cromulent. Nostalgia-bait for me since we had the shareware copy of Jazz and would play the first episode on and off again. Game made me sick though, just not very fun especially compared to the way better shit that Apogee routinely put out there.

I had no clue that there was a source-port or modern version of the game though, that's insane to me. It also looks bonkers when scaled out like that.
