COOS BAY, Ore. – Southwestern Oregon Community College is defending its decision to hire a registered sex offender back in 2010 with an online statement written by college president Patty Scott.

The statement, posted on the SWOCC website on February 12, says it seeks to “directly and transparently” address recent concerns about a faculty member hired in 2010 that is now serving as the director of adult and pre-college education and tutoring. The statement does not name the staff member, but the staff directory lists Curtis Buell as the director of adult and pre-college education and tutoring.

Court records show Buell was a chemistry teacher at Churchill High School in 2007 when he was indicted by a grand jury on 18 counts of sex abuse. Buell was accused of inappropriately touching underaged female students, having students touch him, and having sexual relations with one girl. Court records allege the abuse mostly occurred in the teacher’s office or in the school auditorium, but one incident happened at his home.

Court records show Buell was found guilty by a jury and sentenced in October 2007 to two years in prison and five years of probation. He was also required to register as a sex offender. Buell was hired at the Coos Bay campus of SWOCC in 2010, while he was still on probation.

SWOCC’s statement says the college believes in the power of second chances and the potential for personal growth and rehabilitation. In the statement, president Patty Scott says the college conducted a thorough background check and worked with Buell’s probation officer throughout the hiring process. The statement also says Buell has worked for SWOCC without incident since he was hired, and has received several accolades from state and federal partners for his work.

“We believe that providing opportunities for those who have demonstrated a commitment to turning their lives around aligns with our mission of fulfilling the educational and cultural needs of our diverse communities by providing equitable access to exceptional teaching and learning in a collaborative, engaging, sustainable environment, which supports innovation, lifelong enrichment, and contribution to global society,” president Scott said in the statement.

Like he's not the worst type of predator out there, but seems like your asking for trouble to put this guy back in a position of authority over people not much older than his preferred victims. This is a very stupid decision.

This is insane. This is not a man who took a piss in the wrong place or did something stupid with a drunk chick. This is a man who ACTIVELY FUCKED STUDENTS AT SCHOOL AS A TEACHER. That's absolutely insane. And you want this guy to be in contact with student teachers and as close to high schoolers as he can possibly get? I'm not surprised at all this happened in Oregon, I'm just surprised it wasn't at that one really crazy community college in Portland.

I searched this guy on Google and found this article here:

We first told you about a former Churchill High School teacher who was arrested for sex abuse on Friday. Today we're learning more about Curtis Buell.

Friday police out of Camas, Washington arrested Buell on 18 counts of sex abuse. A grand jury indicted Buell on the charges last week.

We were first tipped off to this story back in October, that's when Buell was placed on paid administrative leave while allegations were investigated.

Then, with a quick Internet search, we were able to find Buell's my space page just before it was taken down.

While it may seem crazy and unreal for a teacher to describe himself as influential and sexy on the my space page where he communicated with students, here Curtis Buell writes directly to them, saying "hey kids Uncle Curti back again."

We also found Buell had 324 friends, many appeared to be teenage girls posed provocatively and some were students. But Buell's myspace page is only a small part of the evidence police have collected.

Detective Ted Williams with the Eugene Police Department tells us, "victims were forced one way or another to do something they didn't want to do."

25 year old Buell will be brought back to Eugene later this week. He was arraigned on 18 counts of sex abuse Monday in a Clark County courtroom.

While Eugene 4J School District officials say legally they can't comment on the case, they say Eugene students are safe.

Kelly McIver, a school district spokesperson says, "any employee that is going to have any contact with children goes through a background check through law enforcement agencies."

Police say Buell is one who seems to have slipped through the cracks. There is a lot of information police won't share because it could compromise the case. But they tell us there could be other victims at Churchill as well as at North Eugene High and Madison Middle School where Buell was a student-teacher. They offer these tips to parents. "Monitor cell phone usage and have access to my space accounts," Williams.

Buell resigned from Churchill January 31st, 2007. Churchill students we spoke with, who knew Buell, said he was an amazing teacher and they were surprised to hear he was being charged with the crimes.

Any students or parents with information are asked to call Eugene police at 682-5175.

Dude has no chin!

Ahh, Coos Bay, the shining light on the Oregon Coast.

No, wait, it's a giant pile of shit and drugs, my mistake.

Many, many years ago I considered moving there, luckily I moved to California instead. Much of its industry was wood and wood products exports and when the timber industry dried up it never really recovered while most of the other Oregon cities fucked by timber have found other industries.

Portland no longer takes container ships so there's been some talk of a container port there to have something between Seattle and Oakland. I wouldn't hold my breath.

We drew names for this one, I stayed out.

Kwang Hui, please warm up the helicopter, you're flying left seat. Check ride for you, Anita is check pilot. Kira, please fly right seat. Charlie and Milton, please assist Jerry, the crew chief, after the rest of us have completed the special processing.

We're taking an extra passenger. Can you guess who it is?

What you always end up hoping for is finally a reasonable situation, you know maybe a 52 year old guy who got convicted of a sexual offence when he was 19 for sleeping with a fake-ID 17 year and 364 day old girl he met at a frat party. A situation where you can shrug and say "Yeah alright, maybe the guy is technically on the list but come on"

But nope, Clown World strikes again.

Now the question is, did he molest the high school girls because he's a pedophile or did he do it because he had easy access to them. There's plenty of stories about a man in an authority position molesting adult women. The college seems to be hoping he just likes to fuck kids and can be trusted with adult women.

That's like saying, "Our bakery just hired Curtis the notorious cookie thief but that's okay because we only have cakes here. They'll be safe. He never stole a cake before."

Well, there's your problem.

Woman in charge of left-leaning institution = Rule-by-feelings and total aversion to accountability will be at the heart of all executive decisions. They live to be seen as gracious, forgiving. and above all? Not appear "mean".

No matter who gets hurt? They'd rather turn a pit bull loose in a classroom than commit the sin of excluding it, which would hurt it's feelings and be "mean".

Simple...position power. Kids will often do anything to become a teacher's friend.
This is probably because I'm a guy but I just built rapport with teachers by being engaged with the subject, trying to ask good questions, and trying to give good answers that would help the rest of the class be engaged. I also involved some topical humor in all that. It did sometimes cause some teachers to give me better grades than I probably should have gotten but it was ethically above board compared to stuff like this.

I almost want to believe in this line of reasoning... but no, teenagers attend community colleges.

Even if it were solely 18+ teenagers, this dude has already demonstrates he can't keep his paws off the merchandise. And sometimes actual minors do attend community colleges too, for various reasons.

No, this dude needs to find a different job where he's not in charge of young people.

Yeah exactly. Power. Both in the form of authority and the ability to potentially affect grades. If anyone has ever read the berkut (if you haven't its on the internet archive and worth a read) theres a part where a russian soldier is interrogating a german woman who was involved with hermann fegelein and he wondered why the fuck any woman would want anything to do with an illiterate moron who wasn't particularly attractive and the woman explains to him that most men don't understand many womens attraction to power, that he wasn't of any interest himself but he had power and access to everything because of his position and that alone draws the attention of women. High schoolers being young and impressionable were likely fairly easy for him to manipulate into it or some latent future BPD nightmare in the making that went along with it to manipulate him and blackmail him for grades or whatever later. But yeah those types are not all that different in that regard to 20 year olds who marry decrepit 90 year old millionaires. Its just more obvious whats going on in those situations. This teacher however comes off as the one manipulating them. More to the point I suspect it wasn't the first time he did that shit over the years just the first time he got caught and if he hadn't he would have gotten more fucked up about it sooner or later

Kinda reminds me of a malicious and creepier version of milton buttle from boston public. Got catfished by a weirdly obsessed student who claimed she was a 20 year old college student when she was actually a high school student at his school and when he found out by accident he kept going with it, started a shakespeare club with her as its teacher sponsor to hide the relationship and only got busted cause he got caught in a compromising position during a lockdown with her in the middle of a school shooting. Like we went from 'this isn't a good idea' to rationalizing it and going full on predator pretty quickly. It just weirdly wasn't acknowledged how fucked up and predatory what was doing was on the show. Sure he got fired but that was really it. This guy seems like he is the rationalizing his behavior type which makes it all the more concerning hes now at a college like that. and let me just take a moment to remind everyone that while most students at such colleges are adults, many colleges have running start programs that include students as young as 16 or 17 taking classes there to prep for college. So theres that big red flag. and they put lucas werner of all people into classes with several such teens when he was creeping on SCC in spokane a few years back and thats even with several people notifying the school of his pedo history and security being well aware of inappropriate behavior on campus on his part. If they'll ignore an admitted pedo with his history creeping on teen girls at the college who says a similar college in an even bigger shithole wouldn't ignore a teachers behavior?

I'd say cause he's a pedo. After all, all the teachers at a school have easy access to them, yet the rest of them aren't molesting them and even people who creep on adult women in work environments usually wouldn't do it to kids anymore than a straight guy would creep on a gay guy, cause he's not gay. Thats pedo shit
