He understood my position and agreed that they were not particularly offensive in the grand scheme of things, but insisted that these terms were falling out of fashion and that there were more suitable alternatives. I pointed out that young people these days will spend a paragraph telling someone to kill themselves without actually saying it, and how prohibiting certain phrases has actually lead to more cruelty than less because people go to greater lengths to express their hatred.

The conversation was a friendly stalemate, but I think there's something to my point: prohibitive speech policies do not stop or discourage hate, they exacerbate it. Back in my day, you got told to get a thicker skin if someone called you a retard. Nowadays, people will go so much deeper and much more personal to a point that it often crosses boundaries - it's stuff that would get your ass kicked a few decades ago. You can't call anyone a faggot or a retard, so you tell people you hope their mother gets cancer and dies. It's ridiculous.

This is one hundred percent true, he is right the words have fallen out of vernacular as they always do ( my knees popped saying this ) but trying to do it from the point of covering up something like hate is only going to make some people say it more. One of my core memories of Hooters was standing outside the restaurant with my friends and classmates from college whenever there was some major boxing match featuring Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, among others like 10+ years ago. The crowds of people outside Hooters during those times were insane, and other people would be dying to grab a table to just scarf down wings, chug beer, and enjoy a hyped up boxing match. No one gave a shit about Hooters waitresses when sweaty men were beating the shit out of each other on a PPV event.

Buffalo Wild Wings probably has better quality stuff, but neither BWW now nor Hooters nowadays are willing to air PPV combat sports events on the restaurant TVs. That’s a bigger travesty than landwhale waitresses who bring overpriced wings and beer to the table.
