He didn't want NATO or one of its allies parking troops and missiles right on the doorstep, and the eastern regions have a bunch of ethnic Russians.

He thought it would be a quick weekend war, like Crimea in 2014 (which AFAIK was blatant Russian aggression to get a warm-water port).

Russia is a regional power on a good day, they can’t even beat the poorest African GDP tier country in the world just because we gave them weapons slightly newer then the 70’s Soviet slop Russian still uses.

Russia has absolutely NO say in whether nato grows or does not, there is nothing they can do to prevent America and all our vassals from doing whatever the fuck we want. They are no China, who also sucks anyway but is at least close to a super power. Even Germany mogs Russia.
