UN Trudeau announces 25% tariffs on US goods will take effect at midnight in response to Trump’s on Canadian products - Why does Trudeau hate Canada? Doesn't he know that tariffs only harm the country that enacts them?

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he’s ready to start a trade war with President Trump if the US leader moves forward with 25% tariffs on products from the northern nation at midnight.

Trudeau called America’s impending action against Canada “unjustified” and vowed to not let it go “unanswered.”

“Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods – starting with tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods immediately, and tariffs on the remaining $125 billion on American products in 21 days’ time,” he said in a statement.

“Our tariffs will remain in place until the U.S. trade action is withdrawn, and should U.S. tariffs not cease, we are in active and ongoing discussions with provinces and territories to pursue several non-tariff measures.”

Trump told reporters at the White House earlier Monday 25% tariffs would be slapped on products from Canada and Mexico at midnight following a 30-day pause on the action.

He claimed the tariffs were a way to force the two nations to better combat the flow of fentanyl into the US and stop illegal immigration.

Trump, 78, has also said he wants to wipe away the trade imbalance between the US and the other two countries while pushing for more factories to relocate to the US.

Trudeau warned if the tariffs go into effect, Americans would need to cough up more cash for everyday products.

“Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs. Tariffs will disrupt an incredibly successful trading relationship,” he said.

This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.

Mmmm, fresh liberal seething.

Damn, Orange Man really does bring out the stupid in people like you.
No counterargument whatsoever, it doesn't matter that Trump took a sledgehammer to America's economic growth and has you bent over to get fucked by the incoming recession as long as he says the right culture war words that make your brain feel the right amount of dopamine. We truly are in a presidency run on vibes and nothing of substance.

It's no surprise America's been stuck in this shitloop for 40 years: Republican fucks up economy, Democrat fixes economy, things are too good (or not improving fast enough) so people focus on petty squabbles and elect Republican, Republican fucks up economy, repeat.

All the GOP has to do to get you morons to keep putting your hand on the stove is to trick you faggots into thinking that electing billionaires has ever actually helped the economy, which isn't a particularly difficult task.

Back to tariffs, I saw that article who mentioned then president McKinley also did.

What Trump can Learn from McKinley's Tariffs

By Quentin R. Skrabec Jr.

If Trump is to be successful as regards tariffs, he must look at President William McKinley’s successes and mistakes.

As a young, struggling congressman, William McKinley’s friend President Rutherford Hayes told him to specialize and develop expertise in tariff policy. McKinley's first legislative effort as a congressman was to increase tariffs in 1877. McKinley rose quickly to chair of the Ways and Means Committee. McKinley was instrumental in forming a Tariff Commission and became a framer of the 1882 Tariff Bill.
His chairmanship led to the passage of the famous "McKinley" Tariff Act of 1890. The Tariff of 1890 went too far and lacked the appropriate guardrails to address inflation and potential trade wars. The 1890 Tariff roughly added a 50% tariff on all manufacturing imports. McKinley’s colleagues overruled him, following the model of tariffs as revenue producers versus McKinley’s model of protectionism for American industry. The short-term adverse effects and political impact cost McKinley and many other Republicans their seats two years later.

McKinley's return to Congress in 1896 would be the forge for America's first voting alliance of workingmen and manufacturing capitalists, which won him the White House twice.

You forgot to copy paste the best part:
The era of McKinley tariff protection lasted from 1880 to 1920. In 1880, the American steel industry struggled to expand against British steel's supremacy but flourished under the McKinley tariffs. Steel production went from 1.3 million tons in 1880 to 11.2 million tons in 1900 to 28.3 million tons in 1910. In 1898, the American steel industry surpassed Britain in pig iron production. The U.S. gross national product grew from an estimated $11 billion in 1880 to $18.7 billion in 1890 to $35.3 billion in 1910. The American glass industry was another struggling industry in 1880 due to imports. By 1910, the McKinley tariffs reversed the trend, and the glass industry had increased its output five to tenfold. During the peak tariff years of 1896 to 1901 under President McKinley, steel production increased 111%, electrical equipment production increased 271%, and farm equipment increased 149%. During the same period, wages increased by 10% and employment by 20%. Even more impressive to free traders, prices fell as productivity and innovation mushroomed. Macro and microeconomic data of the period continue to be debated, but McKinley won the working-class dinner table.
The GNP of the US tripled under the McKinley tariffs as we created numerous new industries. Also, that increase was real, unlike a lot of today’s “growth”, because the Federal Reserve didn’t exist back then.

It's a shame how two really cool sounding years (2020 and 2025) have been ruined by having this incompetent faggot as president. 2020? Covid was out of anyone's control, sure, but his response didn't fucking help. But all Trump had to do was not stick his dick where it didn't belong, keep his mouth shut and just ride the growth of Biden's economic recovery.

Every shit thing about 2025 in America has been through Donald Trump, Elon Musk and every other oligarch in the cabinet's direct and intentional decisions. This is an unforced error with no legitimate reasoning behind it. Maybe Trump just wanted to have a bit of fun and wreck the country before he croaks from eating another big mac?
Damn. 100 proof liberal tears for breakfast. :story:

To give an even older example, in the War of 1812 the USA straight up lost its biggest supplier of manufactured goods as a result of us declaring war on them. All of the New England merchant houses that used to buy and sell with Britain decided to take their money that was sitting around uselessly and invest in industry, and the American economy wound up growing several percentage points over the wartime inflation as a result.

No no, let him enjoy it.

It's actually funny that rightshits hail and embrace their own destruction. US cutting of its ties to the entire world and replacing its working class with H1B immigrants is as close as Russia can win without nuking Washington.

>it's been a month and a half
>literally nothing bad has happened outside of the norm
>"THIS YEAR IS ALREADY RUINED MY LIFE IS OVER WAAAHHHHH"

Constantly acting like a toddler must be absolutely exhausting.
Not when they think it's getting results.... look how the "adults in the room" behaved at the State of the Union - to any rational observer it was petulant and only proves those who've abandoned them have done the right thing.

But the Dems think they're winning, they think it is paying off... the have yet to grasp that only the activists, of whom? They've already captured as many as they'll ever get (and are bleeding away as they hold the Dems' failure to win as not being radical enough) were impressed by having to be led out by security for disrupting a boilerplate speech the President gives all the time.

They have yet to hit rock bottom and have to admit they've run themselves into the ground on a doomed platform, and they won't, until/unless they lose 2028 to a post-uniparty Republican

They're still banking on the sum-total of MAGA and American 21st century populism being just a bad dream that will go away when Trump does.

The fact they'll likely pick up seats in the midterms will only convince them of this and they'll double-down again.

LMAO, Stay mad bitch. USA Numbah 1.

There's an interesting theory then Trump mentioned.

After a phone call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss recently imposed tariffs, President Donald Trump said he told the Canadian leader there hasn’t been enough done to stem the flow of fentanyl.

Trump also accused Trudeau of using the tariff issue to “stay in power.”

Trump discussed his phone call with Trudeau in two posts made on his Truth Social platform on the afternoon of March 5.

“Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about Tariffs,” Trump wrote. “I told him that many people have died from Fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped.”

Trump also wrote that the call ended in a “’somewhat' friendly manner,” while also accusing Trudeau of using the tariff issue to hold onto power in his final days in office.

“He was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power,” Trump said.

Trudeau resigned two months ago. He leaves office by fall, Trump is a senile idiot who doesn't know shit about the world he's leading a superpower in. This is stupid reasoning for stupid people (his base) by a stupid person (Trump himself).

There's no reason to negotiate with the US anymore, Trump rules by whim instead of logic. The "muh fentanyl border" shit is a made-up excuse, Trump is just desperate to make it seem like Trudeau blinked first so he can walk back this stupid fucking stunt while looking good.

Meanwhile, in reality, he KNOWS that this shit is going to tank the US economy.

The billionaire donors who pull his strings got him in a call to yell at him for pulling such a stupid move, so now he's forced to blink in order to prevent the American auto industry from collapsing.

In any other administration, people would call out this dumbass extortion style approach at economic diplomacy out for being as incompetent as it is, but since Trump is the one doing it, the right will pretend that this practice of boldly announcing you're going to ruin the economy and then sheepishly trying to walk back from that ledge, saying you'll leap off it next month over and over is some kind of 564IQ chess strategem.

If you don't see the inevitable recession coming out of this, you're drunk off the kool-aid.

All you lib faggots had to do was not ratfuck the economy or the American people, you had four years to do that and you failed spectacularly.

Now give me more of your seething and tears, it brings a smile to my face.

America's economic growth
Here's to hoping that line go up niggers will be deported to the Alaskan gulags in a few years. Assholes like you want us to sell out the workers of country so that your stock portfolio stays strong, and I have no sympathy for people who'd rather profiteer off of the people than work an honest day in your lives.

Based Archiver supplying a timely reminder that Line Goes Up is little more than D&D for people who wear suits.

Trudeau resigned two months ago. He leaves office by fall
After coronating his best friend and the advisor for all his retarded policies into office, despite Carney not even being an elected MP and legally can't set foot in the House. It's the exact same shit whether or not Trudeau is PM, just now it's in the hands of someone with even less Parliamentary checks and balances and with more investment stakes in foreign countries.

The "muh fentanyl border" shit is a made-up excuse
"Safe" supply is a cornerstone of Canadian progressive dogma. The very fact that the Canadian government leverages the tax base of a G7 country to financially incentivize fentanyl addiction is an existential ideological threat in and of itself, regardless of whether or not a single gram crosses the border. It's so overtly psychopathic and socially corrosive that even the cattle that is the Canadian electorate is forcing a pushback against it.

No counterargument whatsoever,
Nobody needs one when you say shit like
Republican fucks up economy, Democrat fixes economy,
unironically.

You are not a rational, logical actor and thus do not deserve rational, logical argument. The definition of pearls before swine.
Either start using your fucking noggin or accept that masses of your people have recognized this in unison against your illogical point of view and what comes of it.

I don't think it's right to dismiss him on the basis of irrationality, or at the very least to assign stupidity to it. It is entirely possible that his positions are entirely rational because he's a Bourgeois ass. Under the Democratic governments of Obama and Biden, the stock market, banks, investment firms, etc. made money hand over fist at the expense of the Workers. He could simply be one of those people who sunk their wealth into such ventures. In this case, he is mad that the few token measures to help the working man pushed by Trump have cut into his money-making.

I am all for Canada to divest and stop using US technology and electronics companies.

What's a good Canadian operating system?

How about a good Canadian computer company?

A good Canadian email provider?

How about good online maps companies that are Canadian?

And when have you ever heard anyone say, honey, let's stay in and order some Canadian food.
