Mega Rad Gun Thread

is that a KAC rear sight? fuck me, i've been spending like twenty minutes trying to parse how to ask KF if it's worth getting into gunsmithing without PLing but maybe i'm overthinking it.

No, it's a tang sight, kind of like the Vernier sights for a Sharps rifle, but not as complex nor for as long of a range. They've been around for nearly as long as cartridge rifles have been around, usually for lever rifles or other short range "brush guns" to provide better accuracy at longer range than the standard rear sights. The KAC sights are essentially a modernized version of the tang peep sight like this.

no, its a lyman tang sight but the """"""""gunsmith"""""" that made this abomination had to custom fit it around the tang safety.

yeah, that looks remarkably different than the KAC sight. god works in mysterious ways, and i'm learning.

the lyman tang is a good sight for lever guns and sing shot rifles for short range hunting. offers enough adjustment to make any shot under ~250 yards and is very robust. The Vernier sight offers more precise adjustment but is a lot bigger and easier to knock of zero. unlike the lyman tang sight the vernier will allow you to take shots out to 1,000 yards or more. Billy Dixon (a scout for the US army) killed a indian with a sharps rifle at 1,538 yards at the second battle of adobe walls in 1874 using a vernier sight.

Do not pin and weld a suppressor. Pin and weld a QD muzzle device. I highly recommend this guy. He's great. Also avoid keymo mounts. Pick what suppressor you want and then find a mount for it. They're not all interchangable yet.

"Buy a stencil." Look at Mr. Moneybags over here.

The KAC sight obviously is designed to mount to 1913 Picatinny rail while the tang sight is designed to be mounted over the receiver tang (hence the name) where the rear stock of the rifle is attached and secured typically with the same screw(s) that secure the stock to the receiver tang, though typically with a longer screw(s) so that the stock remains securely attached to the rifle. However, both are "peep" style sights where the aiming aperture is a small hole, and elevation is adjusted by twisting the barrel around the sight post, which raises or lowers the aperture and ajusts the point of aim up or down. Typically tang sights are fairly simple in terms of adjustment controls, only allowing for adjustments to elevation with no windage adjustment to keep the sight robust and have less that can get screwed up in the field, though there are some that do have windage adjustments. The Vernier sight is a tang mounted sight and many have windage, but some are also elevation only. The KAC sight, being more modern and thus able to be more complex while staying robust, has both elevation and windage adjustments, but can trace its design lineage back to those old west tang sights while being a fully modern combat sight.

Kiwi Bros.... I DUN GOOFED

Got a PPK/s in .32 ACP when I didn't realize the .32 PPK is back in action and for sale.....

Derp.

About to get a ~$300-$400 loss after I sell the PPK/s and get the PPK

Lesson learned 🥹
Dual wield the Lord's caliber. Also see if you can trade it for a 81BB or something those are fun.

I love bullpuppers. As far as a Mini 14 goes, look into retorquing the gas block screws and installing a smaller diameter gas bushing to tame the action. Mini's come disgustingly over gassed for no good fucking reason, retorquing the gas block to (if I remember correctly) 35 ftlbs helps accuracy. The trigger is fine out of the box but the rear sight is dogshit. For as much as the base rifle costs expect to sink another $200 or so to make it shootable to a modern standard. No idea why Ruger continues to fuck up what should be a fun tiny M1 Garand. Also the Muzzlelite bullpup kits fucking suck, buy one for the meme but don't pretend it will be anything more.
thanks for the gas bushing tip I actually didn't know that and I assure you another 700 is going into this rifle for optics and light alone so I have no problem putting money into it

No problem. I did a lot of research on these guns before I bought mine. It's a current production Ranch Rifle, 585 series. It's fun, I like the tiny Garand action it has. Like an alternative reality where the Garand/M14 was adapted into a SCHV cartridge in the late 50's. Here's a link to the bushings https://www.ruger-mini-14-firearms.com/Gas-Reduction-Bushing-Kit.php. I used the .040 inch bushing and have good reliability, winter time needs higher pressure 5.56 to cycle well but in the summer the difference is night and day. Another thing to consider is installing a 1911 buffer on the rearmost end of the operating rod's recoil assembly. Keeps the rifle from slamming into itself as hard, even with the reduced gas pressure. I experimented with having another buffer on the foremost end but ended up with the rifle unlocking prematurely and invoking more reliability issues. Cogburn Arsenal makes some neat aftermarket parts, like stripper clip guides and bayonet lugs. A lot of people shit on the Mini, and the older ones were crap, but I like the history of knowing these neat little things were used in Rhodesia and Ireland, and it's kind of neat having a tiny Garand that shoots affordable effective ammunition. I just like em bros.

Seems the cut for the release is designed poorly and can cause the magazine to just fall out with default Glock mag releases. It's not just Ben but also others doing tests like Police departments are having issues with bad feeding. Some think having a metal mag release would fix it.
Thats always been a thing for metal glock mags. This isnt new. I know these mags are new but it was the same way with Shield mags.

Magpul Glock mags suck, Mecgar Glock mags suck, the South Korean Glock mags suck, ProMag Glock mags suck, etc. etc. etc.
OEM Glock magazines do not fail and it bothers me that people are trying their hardest to avoid them.

I've got a buddy who has recently been bit by the Mini-14 bug. He's got one in 5.56mm and he's planning on doing a second one built up to basically be an 80s style KAC-556k with the wood folding stock and everything, but in .300blk with a sound suppressor and modern red dot. He's an odd duck with odd tastes in firearms (though I share some of those same tastes, such as vintage S&W N Frames and M14s), but he's my bro and a good guy.
