Mexico has alot of experience in dealing with the USA. It's pretty much the only country Mexico DOES deal with on the regular, and their foreign policy establishment is set up entirely to avoid them getting a frying pan to the face when Consuela Gringo gets into one of her moods again.

They still think the smug liberal comedian bullshit from 90s & 00s is still relevant, so they can't imagine a world where the not-Americans are the smarter, nicer people who do everything better than America.

The whole point of protesting is it's supposed to be a way for the powerless to be heard by the powerful, by making enough noise and being disruptive. When you're a sitting politician with power and money, or a rent-a-protester funded by a government-affiliated organization, you obviously already have a voice that can be heard. It all becomes performative and theatrical rather than necessary. It's like calling 9-1-1 when you're already a cop and at the police station.

You're absolutely right. They want to be seen as the modern day iteration of the 60s activist uprising, but everyone can see it's a contradiction on its face. Right now I'm sure they do feel powerless, but they obviously aren't. They're defaulting to this because it's the only thing they can think to do, and they're desperately hoping it'll appeal to the activist youth of today.
