Something to remember is that cartels can have very different profiles and business operations. There are some who are very sensational and public, flaunting their sicarios and wealth (Like CJNG and CDN) and others who are extremely low key and generally unknown to the wider public (Modern day BLO, Los Cuinis)

Cartels can definitely conduct their business without attracting attention, and in fact the whole cartel world has been trending in this direction for some years. As someone who follows the cartels, the last few years have been noticeably less eventful in terms of executions and gunfights and narcomantas (Even with the more militant cartels like CJNG). Cartels seem to understand that in this era, this highly visible approach only causes them problems. The Trump Admin will only accelerate this and drive cartels underground, because it is clear he is not fucking around and these are not empty threats he is making. And now the US has its hands on a large number of very important cartel bosses and a Mexican Government that seems like it will cooperate under threats of tariffs, it is obvious they have a great platform to deliver on these threats
