About my thought as well.

RvB was best when it was a vehicle for jokes and little skits. The entertainment quality of the show dropped inversely with the rise of an overarching plot line.

I think the very first "serious" season, Reconstruction, was a pretty good mix of drama and comedy, and it was a nice little coda to the show. Then they decided to keep going after that, which was tiresome. It felt like capeshit, where the first time you undercut your drama with comedy it's fun and different, but doing it in perpetuity is just boring. The real nails in the coffin were when they started using Monty's animation. There was a very clear shift from incidental and conversational comedy to slapstick (haha Griff got punched in the nuts!) and it just wasn't the fun little show it was.

Good microcosm of RT, actually. Expanding forever regardless of whether it actually complements the style/quality of the product.

Yeah, something to be said about going from relying on the dialogue to convey the jokes or seriousness to being able to use bespoke animations as a crutch. It is "easier" and thus their quality nose dived soon after.
