Concord - robots with pronouns

Well remember, they wanted concord to be their billion dollar "star wars" IP
I will never forget this because it's so funny, and kind of ironic when Helldivers would probably work way better for that.
Astrobot itself was a hilarious exercise in showing how Sony seems to give zero fucks about the IPs it either owns or people associate with playstation. Like a greatest hits walk down memory lane reminding everyone of when Sony wasn't shit.
It was eye-opening for me to be reminded how robust their back catalogue is, and how memorable: I recognised about 99% of the bots, even though I hadn't played a lot of the games they were from.

I dunno if that's a credit to Sony, though, or a grim reminder of how much more interesting games used to be 30 years ago, when you could identify characters just by recognising them from seeing the box in Electronics Boutique.

Microsoft/Xbox seem to be on a mission to hire the worst people for their gaming division...

Microsoft hired Sarah Bond, the T-Mobile lady, to be their XBox brand president. And double down on DEI that they hired Melissa Boone to be their Halo studios chief of staff, who’s previous job was to research HIV. Yeah just some great hires for their brand

Don't forget the creative director at Halo studios who has been there for a while and got shit on for tweeting in 2023 how he doesn't like games that glorify or fantasize guns, as well as having issues separating fiction from reality. The backlash being so bad he eventually had to delete his twitter and left ins instagram private since the middle of 2024. You wouldn't have a creative director who hates cars working on a racing game, so wtf have one who hates guns working on a first person shooter?

I forgot about that dude. Halo is all about gunplay. Yet you have dude who is the creative director crying about guns.

This video is from a few months back, but it's another smug "art" guy trying to futilely defend Concord's character designs, complete with the passive-aggressive thumbnail and comments about how Concord character redesigns are "doing it wrong".

I can tell just by looking at him he got dunked in school toilets, likely for a good reason.

"concord's character designs are only getting these reactions because of its insane flop on release"
...
They're one of the reasons it flopped you dumbfuck.

Skimmed the video to take notes, this guy is a total fucking retard. He claims the two main complaints about the designs are:
  • You can't goon to them
  • It's not Overwatch
He shows this art from either an artist or a series called Moebius(?) which was apparently the inspiration for Concord's aesthetic:

I don't know about you, but all of these look like much, much better designs than anything in Concord. Reminds me of Asura's Wrath or the classic Final Fantasy illustrations.

This is followed by another amazing quote:
Using Overwatch as an example, is like critiquing a boxer by using MMA as an example.
I will put my faith in your collective intelligence that I don't have to explain why that's a really stupid thing to say. This is followed by another fantastic quote (after a bunch of mush-mouthed rambling about logos):
Design isn't as important as you think it is.
This guy rambles so much it's hard to really pick out things to specifically highlight, but it seems like the core of his argument is that Overwatch isn't successful because it has good character designs, people like the character designs because Overwatch is successful.

There's about 4 minutes left in the video but I don't see it getting any better. If anyone else wants to try and dissect this nonsense be my guest.

Those characters remind me a lot of Aeon Flux, and a pretty old anime I only saw one episode of but the characters were all extremely gaunt and over-animated and the dialogue was fucking bizarre.

If the guy isn't full of shit and Moebius really was the inspiration for Concord then that only underscores how badly the design team failed the assignment. There's more personality in this single image than in the entirety of Concord.

So Aeon Flux and "Aeon Flux if it were an anime".
(The later series at least, the originals were notably lacking in dialog)

I highly doubt concord is inspired by moebius. Moebius sci-fi was culturally primitive, he always infused his designs with some old civilization shoddiness, helmets which look like incan headbands guns which look like harpoons, things like that. It was rarely technologically complicated. Like oliver onions mentions it looks a lot like Aeon flux, what popped into my head was ultraviolet, the milla jovovich movie cause that was futuristic sci-fi with too many saturated colors. I assume the games aesthetic is "the future viewed through the lens of the 90s" cause that's what it looks like, similar to how mgsv adopted the "future tech through an 80s lens" with how much analogue futuristic technology it uses.
For your info, Moebius was a French artist/cartoonist that was highly influential in European comics, and also cited by more than a few notable cartoonists/animators from other countries as well. Including Hayao Miyazaki and Stan Lee.
He did production concept design also, I think for jorodowskys dune which was never made and the fifth element. He honestly transcends the comic artist label considering how much shit he inspired, he would be up there with giger and mignola with contributions to fine art.

So Aeon Flux and "Aeon Flux if it were an anime".

I've never watched Aeon Flux so I only know it for the animation. Found the anime btw, it was called Reign The Conqueror and it turns out the Aeon Flux guy did character designs for it so literally "Aeon Flux if it were an anime" lol.

Why waste your time making a rambling video when you just end up making a chicken or the egg argument anyways. I don't think anyone can quantify whether it was good designs that made a game popular or a popular game causing people to say the designs are good but it's certainly not a defense against someone claiming a game has bad designs either. I skimmed through the video and not once did he actually offer a counter argument from a design perspective about why Concord's designs are actually good nor did he offer criticism of any of the actual redesigns.

Oh wow, didn't know about that one but the design has Chung's fingerprints all over it.

I look at it like this: people don't go to see Mission Impossible movies because they like Tom Cruise, they go to see Mission Impossible movies because they are good movies.

That's why when you take Tom Cruise and put him in something like The Mummy it might get people to go see it on opening weekend, but once word of mouth spreads that the film is dogshit it doesn't matter if Tom Cruise is in the movie or how good his performance is, it's not going to magically make a shit movie good.

Sony could have spent another $400 million contracting the greatest artists to ever live and it wouldn't have made Concord any less shit.

There are times you can, some uncommon instances. Plok pops to mind, that game is remembered cause of Tim follins music and nothing else. I would say actraiser ii is in the same category, it plays fine but it looks exceptional for an snes game. Metal slug maybe, the games are good but they're made infinitely better cause of the art and sound fx, gives the games a lot of personality. Many games are remembered or are of good quality cause of the art and music alone. Granted it's a trend which fell off after the ps2 generation but before that there are ton of games which follow that trend.

tbh cruise also sucked as a "nathan drake scoundrel with a heart of gold" character, not as much as tom holland...

it's cope, even if moebius certainly has an unorthodox style, he still understood character appeal etc. and those designs wouldn't fit the mood of concord at all.
not to mention the amount of skill required to properly translate those chars into 3d. an unironic ligne claire game could have been an interesting thing, but probably no mass appeal.
