I've never quite understood why anyone would want to go that route and not just become an officer.

Two reasons.
1) You want to fly Helicopters.
2) You don't want to be put in charge of (minimum) 200 grab-ass retarded highschoolers and want to instead build or use skills in a technical field. This is why a lot of CWs are tech, because you can leave the military and go do exactly what you were doing as a DoD civie for 3x the salary. Or go private for 4x+.

IF you read the report, Jackie was being punished for whatever by having to report to the pool at 0540 presumably for a good solid smoking. Poor fucking SPC Larios has to ensure her ass was awake and ready for a good smoking at 0530. That means while Jackie is the one being punished by getting up early to get PT'd until her asshole is sucking buttermilk staring at 0540, to ensure Jackie is ready at 0530 her squad leader also get up at zero dark twenty so she can go get Jackie to her mandatory fun.
Basically by being a complete shitbrick she has fucked over not only herself but her squad leader. Also very likely her platoon sargent and first sargent.

I don't know if it's still like this, but certainly the first half of the War on Terror was dominated by private contractors who cut all sorts of corners and standards compared to the professional armies that went in. Jackie just being in boot camp probably meant she was more 'qualified' than the other war tourists she went with.

Jackie's obviously very proud of having anything to do with the military, and her seat-of-the-toilet approach to everything she does now smacks of somebody who hasn't had an expectation of a guaranteed paycheck since. She's actually probably better at using a gun than using the Internet, think about that.
