A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Grumblings rising from a few the backbenchers publicly last couple of days. Some little posts, some in the commons & media. Will this rebellion actually happen, though? Probably not.

Bad Lads Army ages like a fine wine every year.
The main problem is Capita and how fucked recruitment is. People act like basic training is like full metal jacket where you get screamed at all the time. Directing Staff do genuinely give a shit about the recruits under their care and unironically I think that the army can provide what a lot of lads are missing in this day and age, self discipline and camaraderie. They might only do four years but it can set them in good stead for the rest of their life.

David Lammy retreated from his comments that Israel broke international law by stopping aid from reaching Gaza, after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer appeared to rebuke his foreign secretary.
Lammy twice told the House of Commons on Monday categorically that Israel’s blockage of aid flows to Gaza for more than two weeks are in breach of international law, only for Starmer’s spokesman on Tuesday to tell reporters that the UK government position remained only that there is a “clear risk” of Israel breaking the law. Later Tuesday, Lammy told Bloomberg that he “could have been clearer” in the chamber, when asked if he regretted making the statement.
“Ultimately of course these are matters for the courts to determine but it’s difficult to see how denying humanitarian assistance to a civilian population can be compatible with international humanitarian law,” Lammy said in an interview. He described the blockade of aid as “unacceptable” and said assistance needs to be allowed to flow.
Lammy’s comments to the Commons preceded Israel’s deadly bombardment of Gaza overnight, shattering its ceasefire with Hamas, which said more than 400 people had been killed. Britain’s foreign secretary told Bloomberg on Tuesday that the cessation of hostilities was always a “fragile deal” but that “a return to full-scale fighting is in no one’s interest.”

“The reported civilian casualties resulting from last night’s strikes are appalling,” Lammy said. “We continue to condemn Hamas of course and believe in Israel’s right to security, but all parties must re-engage with negotiations to get the remaining hostages out, we do need to continue to surge aid into Gaza and a secure and permanent end to this conflict is the only way out.”

Israel said it carried out the airstrikes because of Hamas’ refusal to release the remaining hostages taken during the October 2023 attacks. Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by the US and many other countries, has repeatedly accused Israel of failing to meet its commitments under the truce brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the US in January, including through the aid stoppage.
Lammy last year chose to suspend some 30 of the UK’s 350-odd export licenses to Israel, covering components used in F-16 fighter aircraft, helicopters, drones and naval systems, as well as items that facilitate ground targeting after concluding that there was a clear risk that they might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office responded at the time by calling the UK decision “shameful.”

I'd say it's a fair sentence, given what he did, but what the hell is up with kids these days? At 19, I was out enjoying my life, not planning on executing people I didn't like because I believed they had 'done me wrong'.

This is sadly the new pandemic - kids who can't cope with life committing stupid acts which will leave them locked up for life.

Very strange as that part of South Wales is not usually thought of as violent - even the Western Valleys of Rhondda and Cynon (Aberdare/Mountain Ash) aren't too bad compared to years ago.

Merthyr Tydfil still has a bad reputation for violence, drugs, thefts and assaults as does Pontypridd, but nothing in comparison to London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow. Nearby Bridgend is also okay but the town centre is rotting to death (sadly - well done Labour and Tories!)

What the fuck do you think happens in British Army training? If a recruit 'refuses to soldier' ie has a temper tantrum, they just send him home. The Army can't take shitbags and turn them into actual worthwhile people, that's their parents job.

Some actual screamers are a lost cause. But not everyone's a screamer, a lot of lads if given a chance could really benefit from some responsibility and good role models. And that's what a lot of the problems these days come down to, giving kids no responsibility and having no decent male role models to look up to. They have no one to strive to be like by bettering themselves. They don't try because they don't think they can be better. This is why Andrew Tate blew the fuck up. The cucking of fathers and male role models has fucked society.

I don't want to turn them into soldiers. Just call it fucking national service or something. Make the little fuckers exercise and get a few punishment beatings for the summer, toughen them up some. Gen Z have not been beaten sufficiently as small children and now look at the state of them. Pale and blobby and self pitying.
