Sperg about comic books here

absolute universe dc has been a fun read so far. batman is the most interesting of the three originals published, but their wonder woman and superman comics are just as good to go through. newest lineup is flash and martian manhunter is coming a month from now. i heard a green lantern one is supposed to come too. my bets are an absolute universe aquaman is maybe on the horizon.

I was actually really enjoying Mark Waid's Daredevil run but then got to the Sons of the Serpent (basically a supervillain equivalent of the KKK) arc. It feels like it's been going on forever, isn't particularly interesting, and a good chunk of it just feels like Mark Waid handwringing about his own white guilt, complete with a criminal case similar to the Trayvon Martin one (in which the black guy killed was, in fact, a dindu who was indeed a scholar). Waid is great at at smaller, personal superhero stories but when he tries to have Daredevil take on some giant conspiracy he tends to fall flat.

The last big mega arc Waid did was similarly disappointing but not as bland, so I didn't mind it at the time. In it, Daredevil got ahold of a data drive loaded with information on various crime syndicates (Secret Empire, AIM, all those types) but refused to hand it over to the Avengers or SHIELD because... reasons. How's it end? He hands the data drive over to the Avengers, leaving the reader with the feeling of "why the fuck didn't you do that a dozen issues ago when it was first suggested."

Essentially, it feels like if Waid can't end a story with Daredevil punching the antagonist in the face, he just doesn't know what the fuck to do.

EDIT: oh, joy, the Sons of the Serpent arc ends with... Daredevil's identity becoming public. Bet you didn't see that coming for the 9 trillionth time. Funny thing is, I've seen people bitch and moan that Charles Soule immediately retcons DD's identity being public, but I'm really, really looking forward to that.

Waid has always sucked cock and his only achievement was being the corporate bootlicker who took credit for Alex Ross’s magnum opus.

Even when he has a good thing going, he always fucks it up, see World’s Finest, he gets DC’s current best artist and just can’t resist to go back to the peak of his career with the KC stuff.

Compare all of Waid’s solo KC stuff with that one, single issue Ross did for KC Superman during the JSA arc.

Waid gets caught up in the multiverse, “hyper time” and comparing superhero mating to elephant mating.

Ross just has Clark seek out a pastor and talk man to man, then faces his greatest fear and meets regular universe Lois, which obviously tears the old guy up, he can’t even look her in the eye. It’s grounded and it’s the appeal of that version of the character, the Man of Steel broke and retreated away from his humanity. Waid never understood that because that’s how he wants regular Clark to be.

One of Waid's issues as a writer is his stated tendency to start his story construction with "what is the worst possible thing that can happen to this character?" Sometimes it can lead to fun stories like Wally getting saddled with Barry's grandson from the future as a sidekick, but it can also end up with nonsense like the Torch losing his pants in a playground while fighting Hydro-Man with Spidey. Also, if a run starts with the worst possible thing, where do you go next? The need to escalate eventually reaches a point that, realistically, the characters can't come back from (see, for example, Reed taking over Latveria).

I used to be a big fan, back in the day. I think what killed it was seeing his whining over the edits made to his Red Skull origin recap story.

The GODS take on the cosmology is being used in things like Phoenix and Storm, so there's that at the very least.

I read Druuna. It is depressing. If you wanna stare at her, flip through artbooks instead.
The reoccuring dwarf is the only highlight.

I've been looking forward to Charles Soules' Daredevil run because people couldn't shut the fuck up about how great it was and how similar in tone and style is was to Frank Miller's work... but a couple issues into it and so far it fucking sucks.
- First up you've got Blindspot, Daredevil's new sidekick, who can't shut the fuck up about how he's an illegal Chinese immigrant and how bad his people have it and how they're 'invisible' (also, he has a tech suit that turns invisible, do you get it -- and, yeah, the guy's apparently smart enough to build an invisible suit but not smart enough to figure out the naturalization process)
- Back to Bendis style decompression wherein every issue would probably be only like five pages in a '60s or '70s, even '80s, comic issue.
- Shitty, lazy writing in general. Matt had a witness that was being held in a holding cell in the courthouse. Bad guys break in and get to the witness. None of Matt's hyper senses pick up on this despite it happening like a floor below him (nor does he seem to pick up on the aftermath when he's right outside the room where it happened) and then, of course, Matt, a blind guy (nobody remembers that Matt is Daredevil anymore), is blamed for it.
- Back to Foggy being a whiny, angry retard over Matt being Daredevil (he's the only know who knows about his secret identity now), which feels especially frustrating after Waid's run was largely a celebration of their friendship.
- Immediately jumps into a story about The Hand, the most basic bitch of Daredevil stories at this point. What's next, Kingpin's back and he wants to ruin Matt's life for the 329548372489234th time?

Don't forget about Bullseye killing another one of his loved ones.
It is like watching reruns. Even Matt's phonebooking is getting old.
People can hardly go beyond Miller.

There should be a story about gothams cops killing the joker when Batman is out of town.
Would be funny when Batman go “how could you” and they can call him out for letting him kill so many people?

this is even funnier because Soule's a lawyer, iirc.

But uh don't worry about Blindspot. He uh, basically becomes a plot device.

IIRC didn't the whole secret identity becoming public get undone somehow. I think it involved Purple Man's kids or something.

In Foggy's defense, I'd probably loose my shit if I was in any superhero's inner circle. But, yeah, it's kinda weird. Then again, Matt's cast is pretty small. It's Foggy, Ben Urich, and maybe a love interest (sometimes dies).

Man, the Hand could be cool but I feel like it's just boring at this point. We jumped the shark with the most outlandish Hand story in Shadowland. Let em chill for a while and have DD team up with Black Widow again, go fight Hydra or sth.

I really liked the start of the recent DD run where Matt's a priest and Elektra's trying to be Daredevil. Haven't caught up with it but I recall the implications of the end of the first issue being interesting.

Catholic Priest Matt Murdock and Catholic Priest Kurt Wagner teaming up to fight demons sounds like a fun comic. Shame it'll never happen. I bet it'd probably sell super well too.

Elektra's trying to be Daredevil
They have been pushing it for a long while now. She is pretty much the new Whor.

Matt himself got a new comic just because of the new show. After sleeping with that many women him becoming a priest is hilarious though. The writer is muslim on top of all that.

Honestly, I can see it make far more sense than Fosthor. Elektra's been a consistent presence and it seems she's always been someone who could maybe be closer to the side of the Angels.

Jane Foster, while a relevant cast member, was kinda neglected in the Thor comics for decades. Sure, she came back in the 00s and all that, but I found her use to be a bit hackneyed. But, I'll give it credit for not being as mindfuckingly stupid as it could have been. It just seems to have been a way to get a female version and tell a bit of a contrived story. However, I'm only mad because it lasted too long. The story went on for too long and it was obvious that Jane Foster was this female Thor. Hell, I get it. They had to time the story to have Thor be "Unworthy" while in the leadup to Secret Wars as a part of all that thematic shit they were doing to put the major icons in a downward spiral. Steve went old, Tony went evil, Bruce became a sociopathic merged hulk, Spidey was Doc Ock, Wolverine died, the F4 were in trouble, the X-Men were kinda screwed up too.

Jane Foster's kind of a bland nothingburger with a nice bland tale. I'm critical of the execution of this idea and how Marvel & Redditor-types kept pushing it. We all knew it was going to be hokey and Aaron's an average writer at best.

I really wanna see Matt and Kurt Wagner have a good old catholic guilt talk. Kurt being the optimistic fucker that he is, despite suffering just as badly or worse, would be a fun contrast.
