Generally speaking you're making more return on the dollar than if it sat in the bank. It's also usually super diversified so even if the economy is down it shouldn't absolutely destroy you. They need to be able to keep up with cost of living increases, and pay for the administration of the funds themselves. If they just stuck the money in an account and then paid you that money later it wouldnt be much of a pension. Also if you worked for 20 years,, but live and stay retired on pension for 10, you likely didnt put in enough to cover your own share without there being growth through investment. Its not like social security where you just take the money from the working generation and pay it to the retired and those on gibs.
