Celebrities becoming politicians. People pretending to be a different gender or even race. Europe being flooded with refugees, and no one can even agree on whether everything is fine or if they're raping, pillaging, plundering, and raping some more. A heretical Marxist pope. An unbelievable superb owl comeback. The Oscars being such a mess. The mainstream media losing so much credibility. Right-wing gay weebs becoming a thing (and I swear it's not just me, there's a lot of us @ICametoLurk)

I haven't been around this Earth for too long, but has it always been so ridiculous?

Remember how 2012 was declared to be the end of a new age and dawn of a new one?
Well right now we're seeing the corpses of the old age starting to rise from the waters and everything break apart.
It will all burn like an autistic Ragnarok and from the ashes, a new world will be reborn.

This isn't really that surprising. The definition of conservatism is to keep things as they are, and as far as millennials are concerned, LGBT rights have been a thing since before their lifetime, and by adulthood homosexuality has been mostly embraced by their peers.

Give it another generation or two and transtrenders will be considered right-wing on the basis that they oppose broadening zoo/pedophile rights groups.

Remember that the last century saw the end of empire, two planet-wide wars, one of which ended in two cities getting vaporised, and genocides by extreme left and right regimes that killed over 100 million people. So electing a cheeto as president and announcing the wrong winner at the Oscars is small beans really. Even what's happening in Syria right now wouldn't even count as a "front" in WWII. Overall we're getting better at getting along, richer, happier and less likely to slaughter each other than we have been at any time in our history.

What's new is the breakdown of the mainstream media. But broadcast news has only been a thing for less than a century. Before big media, people got news by rumour, speculation, world of mouth and travelling bards. We're heading back there now, because Social Media makes stories, true or not, travel around the globe instantly. And the idea that the big media was ever a particularly accurate way to get information was always nonsense - governmental or corporate interests were always in control of the message. The democratisation of news has the big monoliths losing control of what people see and hear, and they're shitting their pants about it because they could be on their way out as quickly as they arrived.

Mainstream media is in a state of existential angst, desperate for relevance as it slowly dies. Hence, they're whipping up hysteria over nothing, or next to nothing, as a pathetic attempt to get attention. Every single little thing that happens is the !!!WORST!!! !!!THING!!! !!!EVER!!! and please buy from our sponsors.

I think one thing that needs to stop is the worshiping and lure of the West. For a very long time, people have portrayed the West as a safe space where people wipe their asses with money, which could not be further from the truth.
Most Western countries were built on self-sufficiency, which is why it them so long to get established.

Yes.

It's just that when Taft was president, being 300 lbs and getting stuck in a bathtub was a hilarious shitshow, sideshow attraction-level accomplishment, and in 2017 33% of the US population weighs that much or are close to it. Everybody else had to step up their game.

Always strive to be better!

Yes, yes it has, and it's actually been worse. As everyone else has said, with mainstream media, you're just hearing about it more.

Celebrity politician -- look no further than Ronald Reagan.
Transgenderism -- the first sex change operation occurred in the 1930s, and throughout history, men and women have been disguising themselves and living their lives as the opposite sex, only to be found out when they died. Race -- ever heard of "passing"?

Pope Francis isn't a Marxist. The guy isn't saying anything that hasn't been a part of church doctrine before. He's simply try to emphasize the teachings about helping those in need, as opposed to go after what people do in their bedrooms. He sounds a lot like the nuns who taught me.

Refugees -- that supposing they ARE raping and pillaging everyone. The vast majority are not. Again, we're just hearing about the bad ones. The news likes to sensationalize everything. (Better ratings) Refugees fleeing war torn countries -- that's nothing new. In fact, it's only fairly recently that everyone in Europe stopped fucking killing each other all the time.

The Oscars -- who cares if they're a mess? Do what George C. Scott did -- stay home and watch hockey. :D (any excuse to watch hockey, I say.)

I got my degree in history and the number one thing I learned is: there's nothing new under the sun. The whole "good old days" or "things are getting worse!" is bullshit. Some things may get worse, but other things get better. There are always highs and lows. :)

Life has always sucked because people are assholes.
