My brother and I were talking about this a while back, and we basically came up with a system that involved mandatory enrollment in a State-funded Home Economics program. There's room for debate over whether it should be funded/operated at the Federal or State level, but we thought there were more benefits to letting each State individually run its own thing.

While it's known that walmart is beyond scummy and does push its own employees into being dependent on purchasing from their own store, every single person in this thread acting like it's 'torture' to eat cheap gives me the impression they never once had to do so. They seem to have this idea in their heads that what they get to have is some Oliver Twist colorless gruel, when in reality with a few dollars on some simple greens and meats you can make damn near anything you please. I say this as somebody who's had to live on unemployment and make every cent count.
