One of the pillar diagnostic traits of BPD is self harm. It would also explain why she is a magnet to narcissistic styled losers like Nick and Aaron. I'd be very curious to know if her ex before Aaron also falls into this category. Borderlines rely entirely on external help i.e. an "FP" or "Favorite Person" to regulate their turbulent emotions. They have no core sense of self. Not being officially diagnosed as an addict doesn't mean anything. There's a pretty common practice of either putting down an actual diagnosis or not putting one down depending on whether it will help the patient or not. This goes for a lot of things. For example, if you're trying to get insurance to cover a treatment facility you'd want a diagnosis down for paperwork reasons. In Nick's case, he was probably adamant with the assessor that he wasn't an addict and they were trying to get him to cooperate by saying something like "hey I've seen so much worse than you, you don't even fit the criteria of an addict! Let's just get you into the program so we can cross those t's and dot those i's!"
Even with psychiatric conditions, it's more important for charting to list the symptoms the patient has, the medications they're on etc. You don't need to specifically write out "I DIAGNOSE THEE WITH DEPRESSION" or whatever.

He wasn't reading a statement - he was paraphrasing one from memory.


Nick was begging the judge to let him and Kayla visit the kids, and part of his rationale is that the kids haven't been exposed to drugs nor have they witnessed their parents in a state of intoxication. We know, of course, that both of these claims are bullshit, since Nick was DUI'ing and DWI'ing them to school in the mornings, but that's what he was claiming. In doing so, he paraphrased the above statement to imply "See? Even the state says the kids weren't exposed to drugs", and that makes sense. But including the second point? - "Oh yeah uhhhh just in case one of my kids tests positive for cocaine, uhhh it wasn't me" - was unnecessary and self-serving. He 100% was getting out ahead of what he knew would be a positive test for his Favorite Child. And he agrees with me that that's what he was doing, btw. You can tell because of how mad he gets about it.

If Nick had even a modicum of intelligence, he'd realise that no one cares what a coke addict has to say about the specifics of their coke usage, because addicts are inherently untrustworthy and their inebriated minds make them awful narrators of reality. That's not to say that Aaron needs to be believed - I have no doubt he's spinning some of these stories in his favour - but Nick will never be able to successfully correct the record because he was a coke addict while the father to 5 children, and that fact damns him long before you get to the specifics of the drug abuse. No one cares if it was apparently in a safe. No one cares if the kids were often absent during the coke binges. No one cares if there's apparently no realistic way the 8-year-old could have tested positive. Being a coke addict means that these stories are just stories, as anyone with life experience knows how junkies lie to protect themselves. He might have done himself a favour by at least being transparent during the fallout of his addiction, but everything points to him being just another run-of-the-mill addict trying to spin the perfect narrative that will eventually allow them to get back to their vices.

People who successfully beat addiction learn to take their licks and accept the criticisms of others as valid. That's part of acknowledging that their addiction had an external, objective existence that hurt others, and wasn't just a selfish, personal good that has been temporarily interrupted. I genuinely don't think Nick has the theory of mind to achieve this, to date his only acknowledgement of the external effects of his drug abuse has come from the police and government 'forcing the point' through actual and potential threats of arrest and incarceration, and you can tell he's even ready to flip the story on that once the threat passes.

There have been two containers of cocaine in this story for almost an entire year. It's incredible that Nick just lied (said he left the safe on the couch and not the bullet) and is projecting that lie onto Aaron's story to make it seem inconsistent.
