Kinda makes sense especially with how much he has refused to ever take a proper break from "streaming" which basically includes alcohol/gambling/wwe and all the other shit. If he's not doing it 24/7 then he starts to feel shit pretty quick.
Ya know, that kind of raises an interesting (by Phil's standards) what if. What do you think Phil would actually do if he had a week off from work? Would he just mumble to himself in a drunken stupor while playing Champions and bitterly watching detractor content? Or would he...uhh...I genuinely don't know what else even hypothetical Phil would do. Watch Netflix? I feel like once in a blue moon he'd mention having watched a movie or something on there. Gin tweet at a reasonable hour? Spend the week making the ultimate shopping list to trump all other shopping lists?

It's an interesting question but the "problem" isn't that he needs a week off of streaming to sit around his house jacking off to hogans. He needs like a full month off of streaming and out of his house/environment so that he can gain some perspective on how shit his lifestyle is. Like I know when I take a meaningful break from the computer and my day to day shit there is definitely a 100% feeling I get when I come back to it.

If he had a week off you're pretty much spot on that he wouldn't really do anything different.

How is he fucking that up? Grug smash is a legitimate way to play the game and one of the more enjoyable ways to play. I mean you can literally punch a child in the first 30 minutes of the game.
Because watching someone play (or make a pretentious video essay) is only interesting if the content creator is truly invested in the game. Phil wasn't experiencing Disco Elysium as a piece of narrative to get invested in like you would with a novel he saw it as Game that he has to play so his audience can spare some change.

I'm a sperg, I love video game media. I especially love when a good creator can show me their love or passion for a game I could never see myself playing. I look at a Paradox Grand Strategy Game and I just see a map of Europe and spreadsheets on top of spreadsheets. I've watched a few videos of a guy summarizing a Hearts of Iron campaign and I can get swept up in the alternate history that's being told. I don't even care about the video game I just listen to the narration I'm entertained by how invested the player is. I love Ross Scott's Game Dungeon series, one of the funniest videos is hearing that hardcore sperg lose his mind over a slavjank Tetris knockoff.

The best stream I've ever seen Phil play is unironically WWE Champions. Because I was interested to understand why anyone could be so invested over a bejeweled clone. The conclusion I came away with is that Phil has pissed away money not because he really loves sweaty jpgs of Wrestlers, he only would get excited for high value cards it didn't scratch any Pokemon "Gotta Catch Em All" itch. No the reason why Phil is obsessed over that garbage is just because he gets to look at his DownTheRafters account rank and see that he's one of the best players ever.

Yeah this pretty much tracks with the rest of the shit he has done.
A rank he paid for.
In a game he has like a 99% win rate.

When it comes to Phil's seasonal downfall, I always think of the ending to Mega Man 9
Ending1.gif

Mega Man is tired of watching Dr Wily try to take over the world, get his ass kicked and beg for mercy because he knows Dr Wily will just try again later. It's lunacy on mega man's part for thinking he'll change and in turn Wily will blame mega man and Dr Light after he amasses another robot army, completely forgetting what happened last time.

I was listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall yesterday and so much of it reminded me of Phil, especially how badly he wants to avoid changing himself, feeling things, and taking risks. I think if you paired it or Dark Side of the Moon with the right TIHYDP it would create a kino sort of 'Blart Side of the Moon' thing. I'll have to hunt around and see what works, but thought I'd share in case other people saw the vision.

So the prestream/business meeting is pretty much exactly that: an elaborate predictable script he can use to not have to feel any actual emotions.
You can even extend that to his gameplay, no matter the game he always does everything to not get emotionally invested/feel anything during gameplay.

It shows best when he's playing horror games as he'll sing to himself and look at chat telling them how "totally not scared" he is and how boring the game is.

But you can extend that to other games, I didn't manage to watch more than 10min of his disco elysium playthrough (it was too retarded) but it looks like he was drunk and just reading the dialogues without immersing himself into them as if he was reading his grocery list.

My theory is that he's either stuck in that adolescent phase where boys are told not to show any emotions cause showing emotions is gay, or he has internalised that 60s patriarchy view of masculinity where men were told to not show any emotions under any circumstances.

TLDR: Phil is stuck in a mindset where showing emotions = bad and being gay and he has to be that macho man

Made me imagine the Laughter in "Brain Damage" with Phil's seal laugh.

I swear he didn't came across as this low IQ five years ago.
He’s absolutely gotten dumber with time, years of being an alcoholic will do that to you. But a lot of what we see on stream is more a combination of how much he’s utterly checked out of playing video games and his overall lazy attitude towards them because he’s so checked out.

He was always an idiot who would miss basic tutorials and shit like that, but it’s gotten worse over the years

Alcohol is one thing but plenty of people have for years on this sub forum linked to studies that show IQ reductions associated with social isolation.

He doesn't even have a discord VC or anything to hang out or "conversate" in. He literally has his stream dents and detractors and that's pretty much it.

Edit: JESUS FUCKING CHRIST IMAGINE PLAYING THIS GAME WITH A CONTROLLER
I really liked playing this game with a controller. It's slow and you don't have to do anything, you can just kick back and pick funny dialogue options. In a game like Balatro where you have to select all these different things quickly it really is detrimental to the gameplay. It's not really like that in DE.

He's wage quitting Assassin's Creed: Japanese Lady Edition. He says it's the worst Assassin's Creed game and nobody is having fun, going on a different rant every 5 minutes about how shit the game is. He looks like he's being held at gunpoint.
The game getting its own video like this because it was gifted and he needs a really justified reason to stop playing it not to upset the person that gave him it.
It's another situation where the game is actual dogshit and he keeps trying to force it. This felt different than Avowed for some reason though. Same bullshit where everyone knows the game is dogshit and it's only the time it gets low support he throws in the towel.

I think you answered your question there, I'd just add doomscrolling on twitter to the mix.

But yeah, the lack of any and all true hobbies is truly fucking weird to me. Maybe taking care of the alleged mini-zoo at the snort fort is the closest he has to a hobby but it's weird how historically he's had no real hobbies, except if you count hoarding shit that's tangentially related to something as a hobby. Like him collecting gaymer statues, he'd just buy shit related to games he doesn't know dick about, like the TF2 Medic. Then there's him collecting Blu-Rays and DVDs and giving such little of a shit about watching the movies that he had a bunch of duplicates because he didn't know what he did and didn't own. The jpegs he collects in WWE Champions are the same, he doesn't really give a shit about wrestling as AssTonne (I call him AssTonne) said, after the first Smark Guys it was clear to him that Phail has zero passion and only surface-level knowledge of wrasslin' that anyone would have after reading 5 Wikipedia articles on it.

Gaming is also a very weird one, he's been gayming professionally for close to 2 decades now, he has experienced a wide variety of video games and genres and subgenres and he still makes preddit tourist-tier mistakes when talking about them. Some examples I can think off the top of my head (besides obvious ones like calling every game that's even slightly challenging a "Soulslike") is saying that X-COM is an RTS or not knowing the term CRPG so he went with the epic neologism of "control-each-party-member-individually-step-by-step-strategy-style RPG." Him fake fanning games is another one, most notable recent example being Chop Suey-Koden. For such a "big fan" it's insane to me that he remembers less about the game than I do, and I've only played and beat the first game once 21 fucking years ago. He couldn't even remember a single character from the game, whereas I remember Crowley and Peshmerga by name since they were my favorites, while I remembered a bunch of others from what they're armed with or what they did, e.g. "axe guy", "gun guy", "elevator guy", "teleport girl" etc.

Gin'n'gacha is one helluva drug.

Funny you should mention that. Part of "Dogs" on PF's Animals album has always reminded me of Ralph.
"You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone."

There's also a fitting line or two for DSP as well.

"And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in"
